India versus West Indies 3rd ODI: India whitewash hosts in a rain-curtailed match
After two close encounters, the Indian team thrashed hosts West Indies in a rain-curtailed 3rd One-day international match played at Port of Spain, Trinidad on Wednesday.
Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and decided to
bat first. It was a cautious start by Shubman Gill and Dhawan hitting bad deliveries
away for boundaries but respecting good deliveries. At the end of the first
10 overs, India scored 45 for 0.
Gill and Dhawan showed intent on putting the West Indies
bowlers under pressure. Dhawan looked composed completing fifty off 62 balls
while Gill reached half-century off 60 balls. West Indies eventually got the
breakthrough by dismissing Dhawan providing an easy catch to Pooran. Dhawan and Gill
added 113 runs for the opening wicket laying a solid foundation for a big total.
With the scoreboard reading 115 in 24 overs, the rain arrived.
After the rain delay, the match was reduced to 40 overs a
side. Shreyas Iyer upped the ante putting pressure on Hayden Walsh Junior
hitting him for 18 runs in the first over. Iyer and Gill looked in sensational
touch not allowing West Indies bowlers to settle. To hit quick runs, Shreyas
Iyer was caught by Keemo Paul at mid-on. Iyer and Gill added 86 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Gill showed his class hitting the spinners and pacers with ease. Surya
Kumar Yadav also fell cheaply caught by Brooks at a backward point. The rain arrived again with the scoreboard reading at 225 for 3 in 36 overs.
With revised target of 257 runs in 36 overs, West Indies got
off to the worst possible start losing Kyle Mayers and Brooks to Mohammed Siraj.
The first powerplay was reduced to 7 overs a side. Shai Hope and Brandon King
looked in decent touch. At the end of the first 7 overs, West Indies made 36 for 2.
Chahal deceived Shai Hope with a lovely delivery stumped by
Samson. Hope and King added 47 runs for the 3rd wicket. West Indies
captain Pooran joined in with King putting pressure on the Indian bowling with the required run rate climbing. Axar Patel did the damage by getting rid of the well-set
King. The Indian bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals to bundle out
West Indies for just 137 in 26 overs.
It was a dominating performance right from winning the toss.
The first two ODI matches saw thrilling matches with Indian winning by 3 runs
