Sri Lanka win 2nd Test match against Pakistan
The Sri Lankan Cricket Team showed their class as they outplayed their opponents Pakistan in the 2nd Test match played at Galle International Stadium finished on 28th July 2022.
Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karauante won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was an aggressive start for the hosts as Oshada Fernando
looked in great touch putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries while
Dimuth Karauante played with intent. Fernando completed fifty off 69 balls and
was dismissed the very next ball by Yasir Shah. Fernando and Karaunate added 92
runs for the opening wicket. Kusal Mendis was, unfortunately, run-out as it hit the
hand of Salman Agha.
After the lunch break, Dimuth Karauante fell after being
brilliantly caught by Naseem Shah. Angelo Mathews playing his 100th
Test match steadied the ship along with Dinesh Chandimal. Babar Azam dropped a
simple chance to give Mathew’s reprieve. Both Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal kept
Sri Lanka in a decent position. Soon after the tea break, Nauman Ali got rid of
Mathews with beauty. Mathews and Chandimal added 75 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Chandimal and Dhanajaya de Silva showed intent putting
pressure on Pakistan bowlers especially Yasir Shah and Nauman Ali. Chandimal
reached fifty off 99 balls and kept the momentum going for Sri Lanka. Nawaz grabbed
the important wicket dismissing Chandimal trying to hit a big shot caught by
Fawad Alam. Chandimal and Dhanajaya added 63 runs for the 5th
wicket. Dickwella looked in great touch right from the word go.
Naseem Shah produced a magical delivery to dismiss Dhananjaya
de Silva. Dhanajaya and Dickwella added 32 runs for the 6th wicket.
Sri Lanka ended the first day in a strong position 315 for 6.
The second day saw Pakistan bowlers making a strong
comeback. Naseem Shah grabbed the prize scalp of debutant Welleage with a brutal bouncer.
Wellage and Dickwella added 37 runs for the 7th wicket. Shah then dismissed
Dickwella down the leg catch after completing fifty. Ramesh Mendis provided
some vital runs to help Sri Lanka post 378 runs in the first innings.
In reply, it was not an ideal start for Pakistan as Abdullah
Shafique went in the very first over dismissed by Ashita Fernando taking the inside
edge onto the stumps. Babar Azam and Imam looked composed before Prabath
Jayasuriya grabbed the important wicket of Pakistan captain Babar taking the inside
edge onto the stumps. Babar and Imam added 30 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
The stand-in captain Dhanajaya de Silva shattered the stumps
of Imam to leave Pakistan in trouble. Ramesh Mendis looked threatening and
dismissed Mohammad Rizwan. The Lankan spinners Ramesh Mendis and Jayasuriya
created enough pressure from both ends. Mendis then grabbed the big wicket of
Fawad Alam to leave Pakistan in trouble at 119 for 5.
After a little partnership between Nawaz and Agha, Mendis struck
to dismiss Nawaz with a lovely catch by Dickwella. Salman Ali Agha and Yasir Shah
looked steady with their intent to keep the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay. Agha
completed his maiden Test fifty off 93 balls. Right at the stroke of the close of
play, Jayasuriya struck to get rid of Agha with a good catch by Dhanajaya de
Silva. Agha and Shah added 46 runs for the 7th wicket. Pakistan
ended the 2nd day at 191 for 7.
Hasan Ali and Yasir Shah looked composed with their defense
on the 3rd morning before Jayasuriya made the breakthrough by dismissing
Hasan Ali. Hasan and Yasir added 32 runs for the 8th wicket. Ramesh
Mendis ended the innings grabbing Nauman Ali and Yasir Shah to bowl out
Pakistan for 231 with a massive lead of 147 runs in the first innings.
Niroshan Dickwella came to open the innings along with Oshada
Fernando due to a stiff back off Karaunate. Pakistan bowlers made a decent
comeback to grab the wickets of Dickwella, Fernando, and Kusal Mendis to leave
Sri Lanka in trouble.
Mathews and Chandimal steadied the ship again before Agha
Salman produced a good delivery to dismiss Mathews. Both Mathews and Chandimal
added 41 runs for the 4th wicket. Naseem Shah got rid of Chandimal
to leave Lanka in trouble.
Dimuth Karauante came to bat with a troubled back while
Dhanajaya de Silva looked in positive touch putting pressure on Pakistan
bowlers. Sri Lanka ended the 3rd day at 176 for 5 with bad light
stopping play early.
Karaunate and Dhanajaya kept the momentum going for Sri
Lanka putting on 126 runs for the 6th wicket. Dhanajaya looked in
brilliant touch completing his 9th Test century. The Sri Lankan captain
declared their innings on 360 for 8 with a massive lead of 507.
Chasing 508 runs to win, Shafique and Imam looked in decent touch
before a lovely running catch by Wellage ended the innings for Shafique. The
Pakistani openers added 42 runs for the opening wicket.
Babar Azam and Imam looked in decent touch as they ended the
fourth day at 89 for 1 with bad light calling off play.
Ramesh Mendis provided the initial breakthrough by dismissing
Imam with a lovely catch by Dickwella. Babar Azam survived a few anxious moments
surviving the LBW call. After the initial struggle, Babar and Rizwan steadied the
ship putting pressure on Lankan bowlers. Prabath Jayasuriya provided the
breakthrough dismissing Rizwan misjudging the delivery crashing into stumps.
Rizwan and Babar added 79 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Fawad Alam looked anxious and was run out in a horrible mix-up
to leave Pakistan in trouble. Right before the lunch break, Kusal Mendis took a lovely catch at short leg dismissing Salman Agha.
After the lunch break, Babar Azam never looked comfortable
before Jayasuriya trapped him in front to give Sri Lanka a boost to winning the
match. Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali provided some intent hitting boundaries with
ease before Jayasuriya ended the partnership. Yasir and Hasan Ali added 38 runs
for the 8th wicket. Ramesh Mendis dismissed Hasan Ali to bring Sri
Lanka closer to victory.
Naseem Shah provided some entertainment before Ramesh Mendis
ended the match to give Sri Lanka massive 246 runs win.
Sri Lanka 378 in 103 overs (Dinesh Chandimal 80, Dickwella
51, Naseem Shah 3/58, Yasir Shah 3/83) and 360 for 8 in 91.5 overs ( Dhanajaya
de Silva 109, Ramesh Mendis 45*, Naseem Shah 2/44, Nawaz 2/75) beat Pakistan
231 in 88.1 overs ( Salman Agha 62, Yasir Shah 26, Ramesh Mendis 5/47,
Jayasuriya 3/80) and 261 in 77 overs ( Babar Azam 81, Imam 49, Jayasuriya 5/117,
Ramesh Mendis 4/101) by 246 runs.
For his 33 and 109, 1 for 15, Dhanajaya de Silva was named
the man of the match award. Prabath Jayasuriya was named the man of the series
for his 17 wickets.
With this win, Sri Lanka moved to the 3rd in the
ICC Test Championship cycle while Pakistan slipped down below Team India.
Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in the 2nd Test by 246 runs to level the series at 1-1
