BWF World Championship 2022 Day 1: Top Indian shuttlers qualify for the 2nd round
The top Indian shuttlers registered impressive wins on the opening day of BWF World Championship 2022 played in Tokyo on Monday.
It was a decent day for male shuttlers as HS Prannoy, Lakshya
Sen and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective matches. The only disappointment
was Sai Praneeth giving a tough fight for world number 4 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese
Taipei. It was a very closely fought affair as Sai lost the match by 15-21,
21-15, and 15-21 to be knocked out of the tournament. Sai looked in great shape in the second game, but Chou upped his game-winning first and third games easily.
Lakshya Sen continued his impressive form defeating Hans Kristian
Vittinghus in straight games. It was a dominating performance by Sen winning it
by 21-12, 21-11. There were long rallies in the second game as Sen took an 11-6
lead. After the break, the experienced Danish committed lots of unforced
errors. He will take on Spain Enqriue Penalver.
HS Prannoy produced a dominating performance as he defeated
Luka Wreber of Austria in two straight games at 21-12, 21-11 to move into the second
round. He will face a tough challenge from Kento Momota on Wednesday.
Kidambi Srikanth used his experience as he defeated World
number 39 Nhat Nguyen of Ireland in two thrilling games. The match ebbed and
flowed right from the word go. World number 39 took a slender lead at the
mid-game interval in the first game and continued to take a lead. Srikanth made a strong comeback to take 5 points successively. It was a very close affair before
the Indian won the first game 22-20.
The second game was also a closely fought affair right to
the end before Srikanth won the match by 21-19 to move into the second round.
He will now face Zhao Peng of China.
It was a mixed day for the doubles pairing overall. Dhruv
Kapila and MR Arjun fought out strongly to defeat Supak Jomoh and Kedren of
Thailand in three thrilling games. The first game saw both pairs fighting for
each point before the Indian pair won the first game 21-17. It was a strong
comeback by the Thai pair in the second game. Despite Kapila and Arjun taking points, the Thai
pair won the second game easily at 21-17.
The third game saw Kapila and Arjun dominating the Thai pair
till the break. After the break, Jomoh and Kedren looked in great touch keeping the Indian pair on the backfoot. The match ebbed and flowed before Kapila, and Arjun
held on to their nerves to win the third game at 22-20 to move into the second
round. They will take on Kim Astrup and Anders of Denmark.
Sumeeth Reddy and Manu Attri lost to Hirkoki Okamura and
Ondoera in three games. The Japanese pair showed their class in the first game
winning it easily at 21-15. Sumeeth and Attri showed fighting spirit winning the second
game by 21-19. The third and deciding game was a disappointing effort as Indian
pair lost it by 15-21.
Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy defeated Aminath Razzaq and
Fatimah Razzaq of Maldives in two straight games by 21-7, 21-9 to move into the
second round. They will take on Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China.
Pooja Dandu and Sanjana Santosh defeated Ines Castlio and
Paula in three games. The Indian pair won the first game easily by 21-6.
Austrian pair made a strong comeback with a 21-10 win in the second game.
Pooja and Sanjana won the third game easily despite a good
effort by the Austrian pair to win by 21-14 to move into the second round. They will
face Lee So Hee and Shin of South Korea.
