BWF World Championship 2022 Day 3: Indian male shuttlers impressive
The Indian male shuttlers had a decent outing as 2 men’s singles and 2 doubles pairs qualified for the next round of the prestigious BWF World Championship 2022 on day 3 played in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Lakshya Sen continued his impressive performance with a
straight games victory over Luis Enrique Penalver of Spain. The Indian looked
in decent shape and made life tough for his opponent right from the word go
winning it by 21-17, 21-10 to move into the third round.
HS Prannoy stunned 2-time World Championship and hosts
player Kento Momota in two straight games. It was an impressive performance by
Prannoy not allowing the Japanese a chance. The Indian kept the left-handed
Japanese struggling with an 11-7 lead at the break. After the break, Momota made
a strong comeback reducing the lead to one point. Prannoy upped the play and
won the first game easily at 21-17.
The second game also began started well for both players, but
Prannoy looked in great shape and took an 11-6 lead at the mid-game break.
After the break, there were long rallies as the Indian maintained pressure
winning by 21-16 to move into the 3rd round. Prannoy will take on his
counterpart Lakshya Sen in the third round. It was Prannoy’s first win over Momota
in the 8th attempt.
Kidambi Srikanth suffered a straight-set loss to Zhao Jung
Peng of China. The Indian looked nervous right from the word go. Jung played
with aggression and won the first game easily at 21-9.
The second game was a closer affair as Srikanth played with
aggression hitting lovely smashes. At the mid-game interval, the Indian had a
decent lead. After the break, 2021 silver medallist Srikanth struggled as he
committed lots of unforced errors. The match was even before Zhao won the
second game and match at 21-17 to knock out the 12th seed.
Indian men’s doubles pairing shine
The Indian men’s doubles pairing shine in a very impressive
way. Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun produced a major upset as they defeated 8th
seeded Kim Astrup and Rasmussen in two straight games. The Indian started the
first game with 2 quick points. The match was played at a fast pace with great
smashes by both pairs.
At the mid-game interval, the Indian pair took an 11-8 lead.
After the break, the Indian pair increased the lead to 4 points before Astrup
and Rasmussen took 4 points in succession to reduce the gap to only 1 point.
Dhruv and Arjun finally broke the rhythm of the Danish pair before winning the
first game easily at 21-17.
The Indian pair attacked the Danish pairing after a slow
start in the 2nd game. It was a closely fought affair as both pairs
took alternate points till 10-10. At the mid-game interval, Kim and Rasmussen
had a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, there was a 26-rally shot between the
pairs but Dhruv and Arjun maintained the pressure on the Danish pairing. The Indian
pair won the 2nd game easily at 21-16 to move into the 3rd
round. They will take on Hee Yong and Loh Kean of Singapore.
After a bye in the first round, Chirag Shetty and RankiReddy
defeated Jonathan Solis and Anibal Marriquin in two straight games. The Indian
pair dominated their opponents winning by 21-8, and 21-10 to move into the 3rd
round. They will face Alexander Dunn and Adam Hall of Scotland.
However, there was disappointment in the other doubles section
for India. The women’s doubles pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost
to top seed Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China in two straight games at
15-21, 10-21.
Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost to Tan Pearly and
Thinnah Muralitharan in two straight games. The Indian pairing did not give in
the first game losing by 8-21. Jolly and Gayatri looked impressive but lost by
17-21 in the second game to be knocked out.
Ashwini K Bhatt and Shikha Gautam went down fighting to 4th
seeded Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong of South Korea. The South Korean pair
produced a dominating performance in the first game-winning by 21-5.
Shikha and Bhatt looked impressive in the second game before
winning it by 21-8 to force the game into the decider. It was an impressive
beginning by the Indian pair in the third game before Kim and Kong scrapped through
winning it easily by 21-13 to move into the next round.
Pooja Dandu and Sanjana Santosh lost to Lee So Hee and Shin
Seung of South Korea in two straight games. The Indian pairing looked out of
sorts losing by 15-21, 7-21.
