BWF World Championship 2022 Day 4: Male Indian shuttlers qualify for the quarterfinals
The Indian shuttlers continued their impressive run as 2 doubles pairing and one more singles player made it into the quarterfinals of the prestigious BWF World Championship event played in Tokyo on Thursday.
Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun proved their worth again as they
defeated the Singapore pair of Hee Yong and Loh Kean in three games. The first game
saw both pairs playing aggressive intent taking alternate points till 6-6. It
was a closely fought affair with Dhruv and Arjun with an 11-9 lead at the break.
After the break, the Indian pair continued to maintain the lead at 15-11. Hee
and Loh made a strong comeback to take 4 points in succession leveling the
scores at 15-15. The Singapore pair showed their class as they won the first
game easily with a scoreline of 21-18.
The second game saw Dhruv and Arjun taking 2 point lead at
the start. Singapore pair made a lovely comeback to level the scores at 5-5. It
was an aggressive display by the Indian pair taking an 11-7 lead at the mid-game
break. After the break, there was no looking back as Dhruv and Arjun did not
allow the opponents to sniff and won the second game easily at 21-15 to force the game
into the decider.
It was a very high-paced game for both pairs in the 3rd
set. Dhruv and Arjun looked in complete control after a little struggle at the
start. There was a long 27 rally shot as the Indian pair won the point. At the
mid-game interval, the Indian pair had an 11-7 lead. After the break, the Singapore
pair tried to make a comeback as Arjun called out for medical attention for
cramps. The Indian pair looked in a commanding position winning the decider by
21-15 to move into the quarterfinals of the prestigious event.
Dhruv and Arjun became the first Indian men’s doubles
pairing to reach the quarterfinals of the World Championship. They will face 3rd
seeded Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiwan.
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj RankiReddy had an outing as
they defeated Bay and Molehde of Denmark in two straight games. The Indian
pairing looked a little scratchy before putting enough pressure on World number
32 before the Danish pair made a strong comeback to level the scores at 10-10.
Satwik and Chirag took a slender 11-10 lead at the break. After the break, the
Indian pair looked in dominating position winning the first game easily with a scoreline of 21-12.
The second game was a one-sided affair as Chirag and Satwik
did not give a chance to their opponents. At the break, the Indian pair had 6
points lead maintaining their position till the end winning it by 21-10 to move
into the quarterfinals. They will now face 2nd seeded Takuro Hogi
and Yugo Kobayashi of Japan.
HS Prannoy stunned last year’s bronze medallist Lakshya Sen
in a three-game thriller. It was a closely fought affair as both players took
alternate points before Lakshya Sen took an 11-8 lead at the break. After the
interval, Sen maintained his domination winning the first game easily at 21-17.
HS Prannoy made a strong comeback in the 2nd game
moving Lakshya Sen around the court. There were long rallies with Lakshya Sen
making a strong comeback. At the mid-game interval, Sen had a slender 11-10
lead at the break. After the break, Prannoy proved too strong for Lakshya Sen
winning the second game by 21-16 to force the match into the decider.
It was an impressive performance by Prannoy in the third
game with both players not giving an inch to the other. At the mid-game interval,
Prannoy had an 11-8 lead. After the break, the match ebbed and flowed but giant killer Prannoy held onto his nerves to win the third game at 21-17 to move
into the quarterfinals. He will now play Zhao Jung Peng of China who defeated
Lee Jii Zia of Malaysia.
Saina Nehwal went down fighting to Busnan Ongamburghan of
Thailand in three games. It was a decent start for both players as they made it
equal at 2-2. The Thai player showed her class taking a commanding 11-3 lead at the break. After the break, Saina made a strong effort with lovely drop shots and
cross-court smashes not allowing her opponent. Busnan took the first game at
21-17.
The Indian began the 2nd game on a positive note
with lovely shots and deceiving her opponent. At the mid-game break, Saina led
11-6. After the break, Busnan made a valiant effort, but Indian won the second
game at 21-16 to force the match into the decider.
The third game began with both players taking 2 points each.
It was a closely fought affair as both players fought for each point till 7-7.
At the mid-game break, the Thai player took an 11-9 lead at the break. After the
break, the Indian did not look comfortable with her shots as Busnan won the third
game easily at 21-13.
