England versus South Africa 1st Test 1st Day: South African pacers shine on rain curtailed day

 The South African pace quartet produced some fine quality bowling against England on a rain-curtailed day played at Lords Cricket Ground, London on Wednesday.

South African captain Dean Elgar won the toss and decided to field first. Kagiso Rabada made good use of the conditions troubling Alex Lees before eventually dismissing him providing a simple catch to wicketkeeper Verryne. Lungi Ngidi tested Ollie Pope and Crawley with lovely deliveries. Rabada struck for the 2nd time getting rid of Crawley with a simple catch to Markram at second slips to leave England in trouble. The conditions suited the seam bowlers as Ngidi and Rabada bowled testing lines not allowing England batters to score runs easily.

Rabada bowled stunning deliveries to Root that bounced. On the other hand, Ollie Pope looked solid and played lovely strokes. After the initial spell by Rabada and Ngidi, the tall left-handed bowler Marco Jansen was bought into the attack. Jansen produced another lovely delivery to dismiss Root via review. The umpire called it out but on review, it remained out as it was the umpire's call leaving England in some trouble.

After the first drinks break, Anrich Nortje bowled freebies to Ollie Pope. Nortje shattered the middle stump to castle inform Jonny Bairstow to put England in trouble at 55 for 4. Ben Stokes looked to set the tempo coming down the track and hitting the pace bowlers. Ollie Pope remained solid and completed his fifty off 69 balls. Right at the stroke of lunch break, Nortje came around the wicket to dismiss England captain Stokes as Keegan Petersen took a good catch. England ended the first session at 100 for 5. Stokes and Pope added 45 runs for the 5th wicket.

After the lunch break, Foakes and Pope looked confident before Nortje produced another stunning delivery to dismiss Foakes leaving England in deep trouble at 116 for 6. The rain arrived quickly but there was no play afterward as umpires decided to call off play. England ended the first day in trouble with scoreboard reading 116 for 6.

Due to 2 sessions being called off, there will be 98 overs each on the rest of the 4 days. The conditions at Lords looked suitable for pacers as the South African team used it brilliantly.
