England versus South Africa 1st Test 2nd Day: South Africa puts England on backfoot

 The visiting South African team ended the 2nd day in a decent position against hosts England played at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground, Lords on Thursday.

Starting on the overnight score of 116 for 6, Ollie Pope was given a reprieve as Sarel Erewee dropped a simple chance after rebounding 3 times. Kagiso Rabada provided the breakthrough by getting rid of Pope taking the inside edge onto the stumps. Stuart Broad tried to play aggressive shots but was caught by Dean Elgar. Elgar decided to bring Jansen into the bowling attack and struggled initially against Jack Leach. Jansen got his radar right shattering the stumps of Leach to end frustrating partnership. Kagiso Rabada grabbed his 5th wicket of the innings dismissing veteran James Anderson bowling out England for 165.

In reply, it was a steady start for South Africa as Elgar and Erewee looked confident. Dean Elgar was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as it hit the pad. The South African openers ended the 1st session at 27 for 0. Zak Crawley dropped a tough chance to get rid of Elgar.

Elgar and Erewee continued their positive intent putting pressure on England's bowling. Both batters kept the scoreboard ticking hitting lovely shots against Potts. Things looked bright for South Africa before Anderson got the breakthrough dismissing Elgar hitting his elbow onto the stumps. Elgar and Erwee added 85 runs for the opening wicket.

Keegan Petersen joined in with Erewee and kept the momentum going for South Africa. Erwee looked solid completing fifty off 89 balls. Potts got a breakthrough by dismissing Petersen with an easy catch to Bairstow. Petersen and Erewee added 53 runs for the 2nd wicket. Aiden Markram showed intent along with Erwee maintaining pressure on England bowlers. At the end of 2nd session, South Africa made 158 for 2.

The third session began brilliantly for England as Jack Leach got rid of Markram with a decent catch by Foakes. Ben Stokes looked sharp with disciplined bowling not allowing South African batters to score runs easily. Stokes produced a lovely bouncer to dismiss Erwee. Stokes then struck once more time dismissing Rassie Van der Dussen to bring back England into the match.

Kyle Verryne looked in decent shape before Broad produced a lovely delivery. Marco Jansen looked solid with his defense while Keshav Maharaj took the advantage of aggressive field set-up by Stokes. Jansen and Maharaj kept the scoreboard ticking with lovely boundaries. Stokes eventually struck dismissing Maharaj with a good catch by Potts. Maharaj and Jansen added 72 runs for the 8th wicket.

Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada ensured that South Africa end the 2nd day at 289 for 7 with a lead of 124 runs.

South Africa 289 for 7 in 77 overs ( Sarel Erewee 73, Elgar 47, Jansen 41*, Stokes 3/53) lead England 165 in 45 overs ( Pope 73, Stokes 20, Rabada 5/52, Nortje 3/63) by 124 runs.
