India versus Zimbabwe 1st ODI: Second string Indian side too strong
It was a great start for the second-string Indian side as they hammered host Zimbabwe in a one-sided contest in the first ODI match played at Harare Sports Club, Harare on Thursday.
Indian captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to field
first in helpful bowling conditions. Deepak Chahar making a comeback after an
injury struggled initially along with Mohammed Siraj bowling extra deliveries. Chahar
then troubled the Zimbabwe openers Innocent Kaia and Marumani.
After a decent start by Kaia and Marumani, Chahar struck for
India dismissing Kaia with a lovely catch by Samson. Chahar then produced the
second wicket getting the big of Marumani to leave Zimbabwe in trouble. Siraj
dismissed experienced Sean Williams with a good catch by Shikhar Dhawan. At the
end of the first 10 overs, Zimbabwe looked in trouble at 31 for 3.
Chahar struck once more time dismissing Wesley Medherve with
a lovely swing delivery to leave Zimbabwe in tatters at 31 for 4. Zimbabwe
captain Regis Chakabva looked in decent touch smashing 2 successive boundaries
of Mohammed Siraj. Sikander Raza struggled against top-quality Indian bowling.
Prasidh Krishna produced a magical delivery to get rid of
Raza with another good catch by Dhawan at slips. Raza and Chakabva added 35
runs for the 5th wicket. Krishna dismissed Ryan Burl to derail
Zimbabwe's innings. Axar Patel bowled with accurate lines and lengths getting 2
wickets of Chakabva and Jongwe to leave the hosts at 110 for 8.
Brad Evans and Richard Ngavara showed intent in putting the bad
deliveries away for boundaries. Both batters kept Indian bowlers under some
pressure. Krishna eventually dismissed Ngavara with a lovely yorker to shatter
the stumps. Evans and Ngavara added 70 runs for the 9th wicket. Axar
Patel got rid of Nyauchi with an easy catch to Gill to bowl out Zimbabwe to a
modest total of 189 in 40.3 overs.
Chasing 190 runs to win, it was a cautious start by Dhawan
and Gill playing according to the merit of deliveries. The Indian openers kept
looking at ease showing their class. At the end of the first 10 overs, Dhawan and
Gill made 43 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Dhawan and Gill kept hitting
boundaries at will. The stylish left-handed Dhawan completed fifty off 76 balls
while Gill reached half-century off 51 balls. The Indian openers ensured that they
reached the target without losing any wickets.
This ODI series is a part of the ICC ODI Super League series.
India qualified for WC 2023 directly as the host.
India 192 for 0 in 30.5 overs (Gill 82*, Dhawan 81*, Nyauchi
0/17) beat Zimbabwe 189 in 40.3 overs (Chakabva 35, Ngavara 34, Deepak Chahar
3/27, Axar Patel 3/24) by 10 wickets.
For his 3 for 27 in 7 overs, Deepak Chahar was named the man
of the match award. With this win, India takes a 1-0 lead in the series. The second
ODI will be played on 20th August 2022.
