Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 Match 5: Virat Kohli’s long awaited century
The Indian fans saw something special as Virat Kohli ended the 3-year drought of an international century with a sensational century in the last Super 4 match for both India and Afghanistan played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Thursday.
Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi won the toss and decided
to field first. Virat Kohli opened the innings along with KL Rahul. Kohli
looked in fine touch keeping the momentum going for India not allowing Afghan
bowlers to settle. The stand-in captain KL Rahul showed his class after not
performing well against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. At the end of the first six overs,
India made 52 for 0.
Kohli kept the scoreboard ticking and completed fifty off 32
balls. On other hand, Rahul also completed a half-century from 36 balls. Fareed
Ahmed got the opening breakthrough by dismissing KL Rahul with a simple catch to
Najibullah Zadran at long-on. He then dismissed Surya Kumar Yadav taking the inside
edge onto the stumps.
Virat Kohli played the Afghanistan bowlers well and not allowed
them to settle with regular big shots. He was in great touch completing his maiden
T20I century off 53 balls and then displayed an array of strokes helping India
post a massive total. Kohli posted the highest individual score by an Indian in the T20I format surpassing Rohit Sharma's 118. Kohli and Pant added unbeaten 87 runs
for the 3rd wicket. Thanks to Kohli’s 122, India posted 212 for 2 in
20 overs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was at his best rattling the Afghanistan top
order. He produced beauties to dismiss Zazai and then Gurbaz. Kumar then got
rid of Karim Janat providing an easy catch at slips to Kohli and then produced
another peach getting the wicket of Najibullah Zadran leaving Afghanistan in
big trouble at 9 for 4.
The Afghanistan top order kept losing wickets at regular
intervals. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman gave good support to Ibrahim
Zadran. Rashid Khan and Ibrahim added 33 runs for the 7th wicket.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman also added 33 runs along with Ibrahim for the 8th
wicket.
Ibrahim looked composed and completed fifty off 55 balls. He
enjoyed his time out as Dinesh Karthik bowled the final over as India registered
101 runs win.
India 212 for 2 in 20 overs ( Kohli 122*, KL Rahul 62,
Fareed Ahmed 2/57) beat Afghanistan 111 for 8 in 20 overs ( Ibrahim Zadran 64*,
Bhuvneshwar Kumar 5/4) by 101 runs.
For his unbeaten 122 off 61, Virat Kohli was named the man
of the match award. India ended the Super 4 stage with 1 win and 2 narrow
losses.
