Indian women versus England 2nd T20I: Indian women level the series with a dominating win
The Indian women’s team performed much better in the 2nd T20I match against hosts England played at County Ground, Derby on Tuesday.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and decided to
field first. Deepti Sharma struck in her first over dismissing Sophia Dunkley
with a superb piece of stumping by Richa Ghosh. Renuka Singh took the wicket of
Dani Wyatt cheaply as Sneha Rana produced a brilliant catch to leave the hosts in
trouble.
Alice Capsey went unaware as Radha Yadav produced a superb fielding
effort before trying to take the third run before Harmanpreet Kaur ran out to leave
England in big trouble. England captain Amy Jones and Bryon Smith looked
cautious against disciplined Indian bowling. At the end of the first six overs, England
women ended at 29 for 3.
Bryon Smith and Amy Jones kept the scoreboard ticking with
lovely shots due to poor fielding display by Indian fielders. Radha Yadav
produced a moment of brilliance, taking a diving catch to Bryon Smith's wicket. Bryon Smith and Amy Jones added 32 runs for the 4th wicket.
Sneha Rana grabbed the important wicket of Amy Jones trying
to reverse sweep being castled leaving England in deep trouble at 54 for 5. The
17-year-old youngster Freya Kemp and Maia Boucher steadied the ship with
attacking strokes keeping the momentum going for the hosts. Kemp made the batting
look easy against the spinners and pacers. The Indian fielding was not great
enough as both England batters showed their intent despite being in trouble.
Sneha Rana broke the partnership as she dismissed Maia
Boucher with a superb piece of stumping by Richa Ghosh. Kemp and Boucher added 65
runs for the 6th wicket. Freya Kemp looked composed becoming the
youngster England batter to complete fifty in the T20I format. She reached her
milestone off 35 balls. England women posted 142 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 143 runs to win, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma
took the attack to England bowlers right from the word not allowing them to
settle. Both Indian batters hit the bad balls away for boundaries. Mandhana
looked in great touch timing the ball well while Verma looked at her best with
her attacking strokes. Sophie Ecclestone got a much-needed breakthrough with a
simple return catch to dismiss Shafali Verma right before the field restrictions.
Indian women ended at 55 for 1 at end of the first six overs.
Smriti Mandhana showed her class with sublime shots while
Dayalan Hemalatha was dismissed by Davies. The Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur
struck boundaries against struggling Sarah Glenn. England spinners struggled
due to wet conditions. Mandhana completed her fifty off 36 balls and looked in
complete control of the chase.
Both Indian experienced batters made light work of the chase.
Mandhana and Kaur added unbeaten 69 runs for the 3rd wicket. Mandhana
hit the winning runs with a boundary as the Indian team won the match by 8 wickets with
20 balls to spare.
Indian women 146 for 2 in 16.4 overs (Mandhana 79*, Sophie
Ecclestone 1/22) beat England women 142 for 6 in 20 overs ( Freya Kemp 51*,
Maia Boucher 34, Sneha Rana 3/24) by 8 wickets.
For her unbeaten 79 off 53 balls, Smriti Mandhana was named
the player of the match. The series is leveled at 1-1.
The third and deciding T20I will be played on 15th
September at County Ground, Bristol.
