Indian women versus England women 2nd ODI: India seals historic series win
The Indian women’s team produced a dominating performance right from the word go as they defeated hosts England in a one-sided affair played at Canterbury on Wednesday.
England captain Amy Jones won the toss and decided to field
first. After indifferent first over by Lauren Bell, Kate Cross got rid of
Shafali Verma with a beauty. Yastika Bhatia looked in fine touch right from the
word go putting pressure on the England bowlers along with Smriti Mandhana.
Both Indian batters kept the scoreboard ticking against wayward bowling. At the end
of the first 10 overs, Indian women reached 60 for 1.
Charlie Dean got a much-needed breakthrough dismissing Bhatia
with a sharp return catch. Bhatia and Mandhana added 54 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur struggled initially against disciplined
England bowling while Mandhana looked in decent touch with lovely strokes. Ecclestone
got rid of well-set Mandhana to bring back England into the match. Mandhana and
Kaur added 33 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Harleen Deol was not able to time the ball initially before
putting pressure on England bowlers. On the other hand, Kaur looked in decent touch
keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and taking singles. Indian captain
Kaur completed fifty off 64 balls. Deol showed her batting skills reaching her
maiden ODI fifty off 67 balls. Lauren Bell got her wicket by dismissing Deol providing a simple catch to Wyatt at deep midwicket. Deol and Kaur added 113 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Pooja Vastakar joined in with the Indian captain continuing the
momentum for the visitors. Kaur showed her class as she displayed an array of
strokes. Kemp took her maiden ODI wicket dismissing Vastakar caught by Lamb.
Vastakar and Kaur added 50 runs for the 5th wicket. Kaur completed a century off 100 balls. After completing her century, Kaur destroyed England's
bowling attack smashing 43 runs from her last 11 deliveries.
The Indian captain Kaur smashed Freya Kemp and Sophie Ecclestone
in the last 3 overs. It was an exceptional batting effort as Deepti Sharma
contributed important runs. Kaur and Deepti Sharma added unbeaten 71 runs for
the 6th wicket. Thanks to a special brilliant effort by Kaur, Indian
women posted a mammoth total of 333 for 5 in 50 overs.
Chasing 334 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for England
as Tammy Beaumont was brilliantly run out with a direct hit by Harmanpreet Kaur.
Renuka Singh got rid of Sophia Dunkley with a superb delivery shattering the stumps
to leave England in trouble. Emma Lamb and Alice Capsey showed intent with
lovely shots keeping the scoreboard ticking. Renuka Singh dismissed Lamb but
due to DRS not being available, the batter could not take review. Lamb and Capsey
added 35 runs for the 3rd wicket. At the end of the first 10 overs,
England women made 66 for 3.
Danni Wyatt and Alice Capsey kept the England women in the hunt
with lovely shots not allowing the Indian bowlers to settle. Deepti Sharma struck an important blow getting rid of Capsey as Shafali Verma took an easy catch at
mid-off. Capsey and Wyatt added 55 runs for the 4th wicket. Amy Jones
joined in with Wyatt keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Wyatt completed her fifty off 40 balls to keep England
alive. Renuka Singh produced a lovely delivery as she produced yorker jamming
under the bat of Wyatt. Wyatt and Jones added 65 runs for the 5th
wicket. Hemalatha dismissed Amy Jones with lovely stumping by Bhatia to leave
England in big trouble.
Renuka Singh got her fourth wicket dismissing Sophie Ecclestone
with a lovely shot providing an easy catch to Deol. Freya Kemp was involved in a mix-up that led the England team to slide towards a big defeat.
Charlie Dean and Kate Cross provided some entertainment with
good shots. Shafali Verma provided the breakthrough dismissing Cross. Dean and
Lauren Bell frustrated the Indian bowling line-up before Hemalatha got rid of
Dean with a quick stumping by Bhatia. Dean and Bell added 34 runs for the final
wicket.
Indian team bowled out England for 245 runs registering 88
runs win. Harmanpreet Kaur and Co-created history as they won the series after a
gap of 23 years.
Indian women 333 for 5 in 50 overs ( Harmanpreet Kaur 143*,
Harleen Deol 58, Charlie Dean 1/39) beat England women 245 in 44.2 overs (
Wyatt 65, Capsey 39, Renuka Singh 4/57, Hemalatha 2/6) by 88 runs.
For her unbeaten 143 off 111 balls, Harmanpreet Kaur was
named the player of the match. Indian women take 2-0 lead in 3-match series.
The third and final ODI will be played at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground on 24th
September.
