FIH Pro Hockey League 2022/23: India loses to Spain narrowly

 The Indian men’s hockey could not sustain pressure as they lost to Spain in their 2nd FIH Pro Hockey League match played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Sunday.

Both teams began the match trying to find the rhythm in the first 10 minutes of the game. Krishna Pathak produced two brilliant saves off penalty corners. The Indian team looked strong, but Spain made aggressive moves. At the end of the first quarter, scores remained 0-0.

Spain got off to a perfect start in the second quarter with Eduardo converting penalty corner into a goal in the 17th minute to give a 1-0 lead. Spain kept the pressure on the Indian defense with multiple PC’s before Marc Miralles scored from PC in the 27th minute to give Spain a 2-0 lead. Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner into a goal during the 28th minute reducing the gap to 1-2. It was a closely fought first half as Spain had 11 circle penetrations as compared to 10 of India. Spain had 4 penalty corners as compared to 2 of India. At the end of the first half, Spain led 2-1.

It was an aggressive start by Spain in the third quarter but Krishna Pathak produced some lovely saves. Mandeep Mor also showed on target but was well saved by Spain's goalkeeper. Indian team tried their best but both teams’ goalkeepers denied it. At the end of the third quarter, the scores remained 2-1 in favor of Spain.

The fourth quarter looked strong for both teams with attacking moves. Abhishek produced a stunning goal inside the D in the 55th minute to level the scores at 2-2. Marc Reyna stunned the Indian crowd with a brilliant field goal in the 58th minute giving Spain a 3-2 lead. With 90 seconds remaining, Indian management decided to take 11 players taking away the goalkeeper.

Despite some brilliant efforts, India lost the match by one goal 2-3. Indian team won against New Zealand by 4-3 in their opening match.

India will play New Zealand on 4th November at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar.
