FIH Pro Hockey League 2022/23: Indian team starts the tournament with a thrilling win

 On Friday, the Indian men’s hockey team started the 2022/23 FIH Pro Hockey League with a thrilling win over New Zealand played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar.

It was an aggressive start by the New Zealand team, but the Indian defense remained solid enough. The match was played on faced moves with Indian forwards making attacking moves. Indian team earned 2 penalty corners. The second penalty corner produced a superb drag-flick by Mandeep More in the 14th minute to give India a 1-0 lead.

New Zealand began the 2nd quarter with an aggressive start putting enough pressure on the Indian defense. As a result of consistent pressure, the visitors earned a penalty stroke. Sam Lane converted Penalty stroke in the 23rd minute to level the scores at 1-1. The New Zealand team showed their class with more attacking moves before earning penalty corners. The penalty corner was well saved by Krishna Pathak. At the end of the first half, the scores remained 1-1. It was a dominating performance by the New Zealand side as they kept the possession and put enough pressure on the Indian defense.

The visitors started the 3rd quarter on a bright note with Jacob Smith producing the touch inside the circle in the 35th minute to give New Zealand a 2-1 lead. Sam Lane showed his class with another penalty corner that P Sreejesh could have saved to give the visitors a 3-1 lead in the 36th minute. The Indian team was awarded a penalty stroke as Harmanpreet Singh scored 42nd minute to reduce the gap to 2-3. At the end of the third quarter, New Zealand led 3-2.

New Zealand started the fourth quarter with aggressive moves as Krishna Pathak produced some lovely saves. Mandeep More and Mandeep Singh combined effort as Dilpreet Singh scored in the 53rd minute to level the scores at 3-3. Mandeep Singh scored with a rocket shot in the 57th minute to give India a 4-3 lead. New Zealand earned 2 to 3 penalty corners, but the Indian defense and goalkeeper held their nerves to give India a thrilling 4-3 win.

The Indian team looked out of sorts conceding 9 penalty corners and taking 1 penalty corner. Sumit was awarded green and yellow card for his indiscipline.  

India will next play Spain in Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on 30th October 2022.
