French Open 2022: Satwik/Chirag move into the semi-finals
The men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy/Chirag Shetty stunned the number 1-seeded Japanese pair in the Super 750 French Open played in Paris on Friday.
It was an amazing performance by the Indian pairing of
Satwik and Chirag Shetty as they kept on their nerves against the top-seeded
Japanese pair Tauro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in two thrilling games.
Both pairs started putting up a good fight taking alternate
points. The Indian pairing of Satwik and Chirag put pressure on the Japanese
pairing taking an 11-9 lead at the break. After the interval, the Indian showed
great fighting spirit to maintain the lead. Satwik and Chirag took 3 points in
succession to lead 20-15. The match looked finished, but the top-seeded
Japanese pair fought back strongly equalling the scores at 20-20. Satwik and Chirag
held onto their nerves as they won the first game 23-21.
The second game was a closely fought game as both pairs took
alternate points till 7-7. Hoki and Kobayashi increased the pace of the game
and took an 11-8 lead at the break. After the interval, the Indian pairing showed great
courage to level the scores at 15-15. It was a closely fought affair as both
pairs took alternate points at 18-18. Satwik and Chirag took 3 points in
succession to win the 2nd game at 21-18 to move into the
semi-finals.
It was a superb piece of a display by Satwik and Chirag as
they showed great fight against the top-seeded Japanese pair. This was Chirag
and Satwik's 3rd win over the Japanese pairing in 4 meetings.
Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, and Sameer Verma all were
knocked out in the 2nd round of the tournament.
Chirag and Satwik will take on Choi Soi Gyu and Kim Won ho
of South Korea in the semi-finals tomorrow. The Indian pairing would be hoping
to perform with the same precision earning a ticket for the finals.
