ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Group B qualifying round: Bowlers help West Indies stay alive in the tournament
The pace bowlers of West Indies provided a sterling job as they defended a modest total against Zimbabwe played at Belivere Oval, Hobart on Wednesday.
West Indies captain Nicolas Pooran won the toss and decided
to bat first. Kyle Mayers and Johnson Charles started off with aggressive
intent putting Zimbabwe bowlers under some pressure. Muzabrani provided the much-needed
breakthrough in getting rid of Mayers with a lovely catch by stand-in captain Chakabva.
At the end of the first six overs, West Indies scored 49 for 1.
Charles and Lewis kept the scoreboard ticking taking singles
and hitting occasional boundaries. Sikander Raza provided a breakthrough
dismissing Lewis caught by Shubma at long-on. Charles and Lewis added 49 runs
for the 2nd wicket. The Zimbabwe bowlers created enough pressure on
West Indies with wickets at regular intervals.
Sean Williams dismissed West Indies captain Pooran with a simple return catch. The well-set Charles was run out with a brilliant throw by
Mungyonga and gathered by Williams to leave West Indies in trouble. Raza took the wickets of Brooks and Jason Holder in the same over. Rovman Powell and Akeal
Hossain steadied the ship taking singles and hitting big shots. Rovman Powell
hit a massive 104 m six in the final over before being caught by Ngavara.
Powell and Hossain added 49 runs for the 7th wicket. At the end of
20 overs, West Indies posted a modest total of 152 for 7.
Chasing 153 runs to win, Regis Chakabva and Wesley Madhevere
provided a flying start putting the West Indies bowlers under pressure. Alazzari
Joseph struck for West Indies dismissing Chakabva taking the inside edge onto the stumps.
Madhevere looked in sublime touch taking the attack to West Indies bowlers. Joseph
rattled stumps getting rid of Mungyonga.
Obed McCoy grabbed the wicket of Sean Williams caught by
Pooran to bring back West Indies into the game. At the end of the first six overs,
Zimbabwe made 55 for 3.
Holder provided the big breakthrough dismissing Madhevere
caught by Lewis at backward point. Odean Smith got rid of dangerous Sikander
Raza with a simple catch to Powell leaving Zimbabwe in trouble. West Indies
pacers troubled the Zimbabwe batters. Akeal Hossain dismissed Shumba caught by
Brooks.
Holder produced a lovely yorker to dismiss Ryan Burl ending Zimbabwe's
hopes of winning. Luke Jongwe provided some hope with some superb shots against
Odean Smith. Joseph dismissed Ngavara and Jongwe with brilliant deliveries.
Holder finished the match with another stunning delivery to dismiss Chatara.
West Indies bowled out Zimbabwe for 122.
West Indies 153 for 7 in 20 overs (Charles 45, Powell 28,
Sikander Raza 3/19) beat Zimbabwe 122 in 18.2 overs ( Jongwe 29, Madhevere 27, Joseph
4/16) by 31 runs.
For his 4 for 16 in 4 overs, Alazzari Joseph was named the
player of the match award. With this win, West Indies currently is at the number 3
spot.
