ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Group B qualifying round: Ireland qualify for the Super 12 with a dominating performance
Ireland produced a dominating display as they defeated two-time Champion West Indies in a do-or-die situation played at Belivere Oval, Hobart on Thursday.
West Indies captain Nicolas Pooran won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the Windies side as they lost an early
wicket of Kyle Mayers caught in Barry McCarthy’s first over caught by Tector at
mid-on. Johnson Charles showed intent against Curtis Campher hitting him for 16
runs.
Simi Singh was bought into the attack early and provided breakthrough
dismissing Charles caught by Campher at backward point. Brandon King looked in
fine touch putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. At the end of the first
six overs, West Indies made 41 for 2.
Brandon King continued his domination while Evin Lewis
struggled against disciplined Ireland bowling. The part-time spinner Gareth Delany
got the breakthrough dismissing Lewis caught by Adair at long-off. Lewis and
King added 44 runs for 3rd wicket. Delany struck again to dismiss West
Indies captain Pooran caught at the boundary by Tector. Brandon King struggled
with his batting after losing quick wickets.
Delany took his 3rd wicket getting rid of
explosive Rovman Powell caught by Tector to leave West Indies struggling. King looked
decent enough completing fifty off 39 balls. Odean Smith provided some lusty
blows in the death overs but could not offer big shots. Smith and King added unbeaten
34 runs for the 6th wicket. At the end of 20 overs, West Indies
could only post 146 for 5.
Chasing 147 runs to win, Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie did
not allow the West Indies bowlers to settle with explosive hitting making life
tough for Pooran. Ireland openers took advantage of field restrictions. At the
end of the first six overs, Ireland raced away to 64 for 0.
Akeal Hossain provided the breakthrough getting rid of Balbirnie
caught by Mayers. Balbirnie and Stirling added 73 runs for the opening wicket
laying a strong foundation for the win. Lorcan Tucker came to the crease and
looked in decent touch. After a string of low scores, Paul Stirling showed intent
and kept Ireland on course for a win.
Stirling completed fifty off 32 balls and never looked troubled.
Lorcan Tucker was caught and bowled but Odean Smith overstepped. Tucker and
Stirling kept at ease ensuring that Ireland chased down this modest total
comfortably. Tucker and Stirling added unbeaten 77 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
Ireland 150 for 1 in 17.3 overs ( Stirling 66*, Tucker 45*,
Akeal Hossein 1/38) beat West Indies 146 for 5 in 20 overs ( King 62*, Gareth Delany
3/16) by 9 wickets.
For his figures of 3 for 16 in 4 overs, Gareth Delany was
named the player of the match award. Ireland qualified as Group B runners-up
going into Australia, England, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka’s group
in the Super 12 stage.
