ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Group A qualifying round: UAE stun Namibia, Netherlands qualifies for Super 12
The United Arab Emirates provided a spirited display to register their first win in the final Group A qualifying round match played at Kardinia Park, Geelong on Thursday.
UAE captain CP Rizwan won the toss and decided to bat first.
Vritiya Arvind struggled initially against disciplined Namibia bowling while
Muhammed Waseem hit some lovely shots not allowing dot ball pressure to rise.
At the end of the first six overs, the UAE openers scored 30 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Arvind's struggle ended by providing a simple catch to Lingen. Arvind and Waseem added 39 runs for the opening
wicket. CP Rizwan provided the impetus along with Waseem taking singles and
boundaries at will. Both batters showed intent not allowing Namibia bowlers to
settle keeping the scoreboard ticking. Waseem completed fifty off 40 balls and was soon caught by Truplemann at short third man. Waseem and Rizwan added 58 runs
for the 2nd wicket.
CP Rizwan looked in great touch putting enough pressure on
Namibian bowlers. Basil Hameed did not look comfortable swinging the bat
without touching it. Rizwan and Hameed provided the impetus in the last smashing
JJ Smith for 21 runs to help UAE post 148 for 3. Rizwan and Hameed unbeaten 35
runs for the 4th wicket.
Chasing 149 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for
Namibia as Stephen Baard was dismissed cheaply with a lovely delivery by Junaid
Siddique. Basil Hameed grabbed the wicket of Lingen caught by Sharafu. Hameed
was given the third over and did damage by taking Lofite Eaton via review. The
umpire called not out but on review, it was overturned to out. At the end of the first six overs, Namibia made 34 for 3.
Soon after, UAE bowlers struck in quick succession
dismissing Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus, JJ Smit. Zahoor Khan produced two
lovely yorkers to get rid of Frylinck and Zane Green to leave Namibia in deep
trouble. The experienced David Wiese looked in special form putting enough pressure
on Trumplemann.
Wiese and Trumplemann showed their class with the required
run rate climbing. Wiese proved his worth with some big shots to keep Namibia
afloat. Wiese completed fifty off 31 balls. Zahoor Khan bowled a stunning 19th
over giving away just 6 runs.
Muhammed Waseem was handed the 20th over with 14
runs to defend. Waseem held his nerves as Sharafu took a stunning catch at
long-on to dismiss Wiese. Wiese and Trumplemann added 70 runs for the 8th
wicket. Waseem held his nerves as UAE beat Namibia by 7 runs.
UAE 148 for 3 in 20 overs ( Muhammed Waseem 50, CP Rizwan
