ICC T20 World Cup Group B qualifying round: Zimbabwe qualify for Super 12 stage with comphrensive win
Zimbabwe made it into the Super 12 stage with a comprehensive win over Scotland in the final qualifying round match played at Belivere Oval, Hobart on Thursday.
Scotland captain Richard Berrington won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Michael Jones could not provide a
decent start with lovely catch by Sikander Raza. George Munsey and Matthew
Cross struggled against a disciplined Zimbabwe bowling lineup. Medherve took a
stunning diving catch to dismiss Matthew Cross. At the end of first six overs,
Scotland scored 43 for 2.
Munsey and Richard Berrington struggled against Sean
Williams and Sikander Raza not able to rotate the strike easily. Sikander Raza
got the wicket of Scotland captain Berrington because of dot balls. Berrington
and Munsey added 40 runs for the 3rd wicket. Calcum MacLeod and
Munsey was not able to hit boundaries easily against disciplined Zimbabwe
bowling.
Munsey reached fifty off 46 balls and looked to launch at
the back end. Ngavara dismissed Munsey caught by Shumba. MacLeod and Leask could
not hit big shots against good-quality Zimbabwe bowling. Muzabrani overstepped few
times but controlled well. At the end of 20 overs, Scotland posted 132 for 6.
Chasing 133 runs to win, it was not an ideal start as they
as lost the wicket of Regis Chakabva via review for LBW. The umpires called out
but it was retained due to umpires call. Wesley Madhevere chopped onto the
stumps as Zimbabwe lost 2 early wickets. The experienced duo of Sean Williams
and Craig Ervine steadied the ship putting bad deliveries away for boundaries. At
the end of 6 overs, Zimbabwe scored 30 for 2.
Scotland struck again as Williams was caught. Williams and
Ervine added 35 runs for the 3rd wicket. Sikander Raza showed his
impressive form once more time taking on Scotland bowling while Ervine looked
steady keeping the scoreboard ticking. Josh Davey provided the breakthrough
dismissing Raza for a quickfire cameo. Raza and Ervine added 64 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Ervine steadied the ship completing fifty off 48 balls. He
tried to hit a shot but was caught by MacLeod at mid-off. Milton Shumba and Ryan
Burl took singles with ease. Burl completed the formalities with a boundary to
help Zimbabwe win the match by 5 wickets.
Zimbabwe 133 for 5 in 18.3 overs ( Ervine 58, Raza 40, Davey
2/16) beat Scotland 132 for 6 in 20 overs ( Munsey 54, Tendai Chatara 2/14) by
5 wickets.
For his 40 off 23 balls and 1 for 20, Sikander Raza was
named the player of the match award. Zimbabwe finished top of Group B and clubbed
with India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands.
