Super 12 Group 1: Marcus Stoinis special gives Australia a commanding win
The Australian Cricket Team returned to winning ways as they defeated Sri Lanka in a one-sided contest played at Optus Stadium, Perth on Tuesday.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for the hosts as Pat Cummins got rid of
Kusal Mendis with a lovely bouncer caught by Mitchell Marsh. Pathum Nissanka
and Dhanajaya de Silva struggled against the pace and bounce of Australian
bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lanka scored 36 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Dhanajaya de Silva and Nissanka
kept the momentum going taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Ashton
Agar got a much-needed breakthrough for Australia dismissing Dhanajaya de Silva
with a stunning catch by Warner at long-on. Dhanajaya de Silva and Nissanka added
69 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Pathum Nissanka fell with an awful mix-up leaving Sri Lanka
struggling. Lanka lost another couple of quick wickets to Bhanuka Rajapaksa,
Dasun Shanaka, and Hasranaga. Chamika Karaunate and Charith Asalanaka put up an excellent
display of batting with some lovely hits. Both Lankan batters scored 20 runs
off the final over against Pat Cummins. Asalanaka and Karaunate added unbeaten 37
runs for the 7th wicket helping Lanka to post 157 for 6.
Sri Lanka was dealt a huge blow as Binuara Fernando limped
off the field due to an injury. Lahiru Kumara troubled Finch with swing and seam.
Theekshana provided breakthrough for Lanka as he dismissed Warner as Shanaka
took a good catch. The Lankan bowlers never allowed Australian batters to score
runs freely. At the end of the first six overs, Australia made 33 for 1.
Mitchell Marsh and Finch upped the ante with some lovely shots
putting Dhanajaya de Silva under pressure. Dhanajaya de Silva eventually got
rid of Marsh after a few lucky chances. Marsh and Finch added 34 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
Glenn Maxwell came at the crease and just blasted away Hasranaga
in his first over for 19 runs. Finch was given a reprieve as Bandara could not
hold onto to a catch after three attempts. He then produced a stunning catch at
the boundary to dismiss Maxwell.
Marcus Stoinis looked in cracking form right from the word go
putting enough pressure on the Lankan spinners. On other hand, Finch struggled
with his timing. Stoinis completed his fifty off just 17 balls and created an impact.
It was a special knock by Stoinis as he remained unbeaten on 59. Stoinis and
Finch added unbeaten 69 runs for the 4th wicket. Stoinis smashed 4
fours and 6 sixes with a strike rate of 327.77.
Australia 158 for 3 in 16.3 overs (Stoinis 59*, Dhanajaya de
Silva 1/18) beat Sri Lanka 157 for 6 in 20 overs ( Nissanka 40, Asalanaka 38*,
Starc 1/23) by 7 wickets.
For his unbeaten 59 off 18 balls, Marcus Stoinis was named
the player of the match award.
