Super 12 Group 1: New Zealand stun defending Champions Australia with dominating win
New Zealand stunned the defending Champions Australia by 89 runs in the opening match of the Super 12 stage played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on Saturday.
Australia captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
field first. Finn Allen blasted away Mitchell Starc for 14 runs in the very
first over of the match. The explosive right-handed batter put enough pressure
on Australian bowling taking advantage of the first six overs. Josh Hazlewood
produced a peach of a yorker to dismiss the dangerous Finn Allen. Allen made 42
off 16 balls laying a strong foundation for a big total. Allen and Conway added
56 runs in just 4.1 overs. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand raced
away to 65 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Conway and Williamson kept the
scoreboard ticking taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Conway
survived a close LBW shout given not out but the decision remained not out as it
was going over the stumps. It was great batting by both Kiwi batters not
allowing the Australian bowlers to settle. Conway completed fifty off 36 balls
and kept New Zealand on course for a big total.
Zampa struck getting rid of Kiwi captain Williamson.
Williamson and Conway added 69 runs for the 2nd wicket. Josh
Hazlewood did the damage again getting rid of Glenn Phillips with a simple
return catch. Jimmy Neesham and Conway kept the momentum going for New Zealand
hitting boundaries and great running between the wickets. Neesham provided the
impetus with a big six off the final delivery to help New Zealand post 200 for
3. Neesham and Conway added unbeaten 48 runs for the 4th wicket.
Chasing 201 runs to win, the hosts got off to a shaky start
as they lost big wicket of David Warner hitting the thigh pad onto the stumps.
Mitchell Marsh and Aaron Finch showed intent in putting pressure on New Zealand
bowlers. Santer struck getting rid of Australian captain Finch caught by
Williamson to leave Australia in trouble. Southee dismissed Mitchell Marsh with
a lovely high catch by Neesham. At the end of the first six overs, Australia ended
at 37 for 3.
Glenn Phillips took a stunning diving catch to dismiss
Marcus Stoinis. The New Zealand bowlers kept taking wickets at regular
intervals. Apart from Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins, none of the Australian
batters provided resistance. It was a dominating performance by the New Zealand
side as they won the match by 89 runs.
New Zealand 200 for 3 in 20 overs ( Conway 92*, Finn Allen
42, Hazlewood 2/41) beat Australia 111 in 17.1 overs ( Maxwell 28, Cummins 21,
Southee 3/6, Santer 3/31) by 89 runs.
For his unbeaten 92 off 58 balls and 2 catches, Devon Conway
was named the player of the match award.
