Super 12 Group 1: New Zealand thrash Sri Lanka to move closer to semi-finals
Known as the underdogs of ICC tournaments, New Zealand produced a dominating display to defeat the Asian Champions Sri Lanka in a one-sided contest played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on Saturday.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided
to bat first. Mahesh Theekshana produced the magic getting rid of dangerous
Finn Allen putting pressure on the spinner. Dhanajaya de Silva then dismissed
Conway with another good piece of bowling leaving New Zealand in trouble.
Kasun Rajitha named as a replacement produced a peach to get
rid of Kane Williamson leaving Kiwis in big trouble at 15 for 3. Glenn
Phillips and Daryl Mitchell looked cautious against disciplined Lankan bowling.
At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand 25 for 3.
Phillips kept the pressure on the Lankan bowling with
attacking shots. Pathum Nissanka dropped a sitter chance at long-off to dismiss
Phillips. Glenn Phillips did not allow the Lankan bowlers to settle with
aggressive shots. On other hand, Mitchell struggled with his timing. Lankan
fielding was not great enough as they dropped two to three catches off
Phillips.
Glenn Phillips completed fifty off 39 balls and maintained
the pressure on Lankan bowlers. Hasranaga finally struck to dismiss Mitchell.
Mitchell and Phillips added 84 runs for the 4th wicket. Phillips
looked in sensational touch, especially against Theekshana. Rajitha grabbed the important wicket of James Neesham caught by Shanaka.
Neesham and Phillips added 30 runs for the 5th
wicket. Phillips managed to complete his 2nd T20I century off 61
balls. He was eventually caught in the final over for a brilliant knock. Ish Sodhi
was run out while trying to the second run. Tim Southee smashed a boundary off the final delivery to help New Zealand post 167 for 7.
Chasing 168 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for
Lankan Lions as they early wicket of Pathum Nissanka in the first over. Trent
Boult took the wickets of Kusal Mendis and Dhanajaya de Silva to put Lanka under immense
pressure. Boult struck again to dismiss Charith Asalanaka leaving Sri Lanka in
deep trouble at 8 for 4.
Chamika Karaunate was promoted to number 6. Bhanuka Rajapaksa
put some pressure on Ferguson with aggressive shots. At the end of the first six
overs, Sri Lanka looked in trouble at 24 for 4.
Mitchell Santer got the wicket on the first ball getting rid
of Chamika Karaunate leaving Lanka struggling. Bhaunka Rajapaksa looked in
decent touch putting some pressure on Kiwi bowlers. Dasun Shanaka also showed
some intent against Sodhi and Santer. Ferguson struck to get rid of Rajapaksa
with a simple catch to Williamson. Rajapaksa and Shanaka added 34 runs for the 6th
wicket.
New Zealand bowlers kept picking wickets at regular
intervals. Dasun Shanaka looked impressive with his shots. The Kiwis bundled
out Sri Lanka for 102 to win by 65 runs.
New Zealand 167 for 6 in 20 overs ( Glenn Phillips 104, Rajitha
2/23) beat Sri Lanka 102 in 19.2 overs ( Shanaka 35, Rajapaksa 34, Boult 4/13)
by 65 runs.
For his 104 off 64 balls, Glenn Phillips was named the player of the match. With this win, New Zealand consolidated its top position.
