Super 12 Group 2: Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe in last ball finish
Bangladesh held onto their nerves as they register a thrilling win over Zimbabwe played at The Gabba, Brisbane on Sunday.
Bangladesh captain Shakib AL Hasan won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Soumya Sarkar was dismissed without
opening his account caught by Chakabva off Muzabrani. Liton Das looked in great
touch putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Muzabrani took his 2nd
wicket getting rid of Das with a lovely catch by Chatara at short third man. At
the end of the first six overs, Bangladesh made 32 for 2.
Shakib AL Hasan and Shanto steadied the ship for Bangladesh
taking singles and hitting boundaries not allowing the Zimbabwe bowlers to
settle. Sean Williams grabbed the important wicket of Shakib AL Hasan caught by
Muzabrani. Shakib and Shanto added 54 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Shanto looked impressive keeping the momentum going completing fifty off 45
balls.
Things looked impressive for Bangladesh with Shanto taking
on Zimbabwe bowlers along with Afif Hossain. Sikander Raza took the important
wicket of Shanto caught by Sean Ervine. Shanto and Afif added 36 runs for the
5th wicket. Ngavara kept things tight in the final over taking 2
wickets from Mossadek Hossain and Afif Hossain off the final delivery. Nurul
Hasan was run out while trying to take the second run. Bangladesh posted 150
for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 151 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for
Zimbabwe as Wesley Medhevere was caught by Musfiztur Rahman at third man. Taskin
Ahmed grabbed his 2nd wicket dismissing Zimbabwe captain Ervine. Musfiztur
Rahman rattled the opponents with 2 wickets in an over getting rid of Milton
Shumba and Sikander Raza to leave Zimbabwe in deep trouble. Sean Williams
looked in decent touch putting pressure on Bangladesh's bowling. At the end of the first six overs, Zimbabwe scored 36 for 4.
Regis Chakabva and Williams steadied the ship keeping the momentum going on for Zimbabwe. Taskin Ahmed was bought into the attack getting
rid of Chakabva to leave them in big trouble. Chakabva and Williams added 34
runs for the 5th wicket. Williams and Ryan Burl kept Zimbabwe's hopes
alive with lovely shots with the required run rate climbing up.
Sean Williams looked calm completing fifty off 37 balls
while Ryan Burl showed intent to keep Zimbabwe's hopes alive. Shakib AL Hasan
produced a stunning direct hit to dismiss Williams. Williams and Ryan Burl
added 63 runs for the 6th wicket.
The match went right down the wire with 16 runs required off the final over. Mossadek Hossain dismissed Brad Evans to put pressure on Zimbabwe.
Richard Ngavara smashed 1 boundary and 1 six to bring back Zimbabwe into the
match. Mossadek dismissed Ngavara to leave Zimbabwe requiring 5 runs off the last
delivery.
Nurul Hasan did the stumping in front of the stumps as
umpires called no ball. Mossadek Hossain held onto his nerves not allowing
Muzabrani to hit a big shot. Bangladesh jumped for joy as they won the match by
just 3 runs.
Bangladesh 150 for 7 in 20 overs ( Shanto 71, Afif Hossain
29, Muzabrani 2/13, Ngarava 2/24) beat Zimbabwe 147 for 8 in 20 overs ( Sean
Williams 64, Ryan Burl 27*, Taskin Ahmed 3/19) by 3 runs.
For his 3 for 19 in 4 overs, Taskin Ahmed was named the
player of the match award. With this win, Bangladesh moved to 2nd in the points table.
