Super 12 Group 2: David Miller brilliance gives South Africa close win
Thanks to David Miller’s brilliance, South Africa edged past India in a closely fought affair played at Optus Stadium, Perth on Sunday.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat
first. KL Rahul struggled against Wayne Parnell in the very first over without
scoring any runs. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul showed intent putting some pressure
on South African pacers. Lungi Ngidi was bought into the attack dismissing both
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in the same over.
Virat Kohli played some lovely shots keeping his form going.
At the end of the first six overs, India made 33 for 2. Ngidi struck again to
dismiss Kohli caught by Rabada at fine leg. Deepak Hooda replacing Axar Patel
was dismissed cheaply by Nortje to leave India in big trouble. Surya Kumar
Yadav looked in great touch hitting aggressive shots against South African
pacers.
Ngidi took his fourth wicket dismissing Hardik Pandya with a
stunning catch by Rabada to leave India in deep trouble at 49 for 5. Surya
Kumar Yadav showed his class by putting the South African bowlers under pressure, especially
Keshav Maharaj. On other hand, Dinesh Karthik struggled against disciplined bowling
by SA. Wayne Parnell struck to get rid of Karthik with a simple catch to
Rossouw at backward point. Dinesh and Surya added 52 runs for the 6th
wicket. Surya Kumar completed fifty off 30 balls ensuring India’s recovery with
some sensational shots.
The South African pacers did not allow Surya Kumar Yadav to
hit big shots and was eventually dismissed for a well-made 68. At the end of 20
overs, India made 133 for 9.
Arshdeep Singh rattled the top order dismissing Quinton de
Kock with a lovely delivery and then Rossouw with a review for LBW. The umpires
called not out but on review, it was overturned to out leaving South Africa in
trouble.
A sensational catch by Dinesh Karthik resulted in the wicket
of Temba Bavuma leaving South Africa in trouble. At the end of the first six
overs, South Africa made 24 for 3.
David Miller and Aiden Markram steadied themselves taking
singles. The Indian fielding and catching was not up to the mark as Kohli
dropped a sitter to dismiss Markram. Miller and Markram showed their intent to keep the momentum going for South Africa. Markram completed fifty off 38
balls to keep Proteas on course for a win. Rishabh Pant replaced Dinesh Karthik
as a replacement while wicketkeeping.
Hardik Pandya eventually struck dismissing Markram caught by
Surya Kumar Yadav. Markram and Miller added 76 runs for the 4th
wicket. The match went down to the last over, but Miller held his composure completing
fifty off 40 balls. South Africa won the match by 5 wickets with 2 balls to
spare.
South Africa 137 for 5 in 19.4 overs ( Miller 59*, Markram
52, Arshdeep Singh 2/25, Shami 1/13) beat India 133 for 9 in 20 overs ( Surya
Kumar Yadav 68, Ngidi 4/29, Wayne Parnell 3/15) by 5 wickets.
For his 4 for 29 in 4 overs, Lungi Ngidi was named the player of the match award. With this win, South Africa moved to the top of the points table.
