Super 12 Group 2: Taskin Ahmed brilliance gives Bangladesh win

 Bangladesh started their ICC T20 World Cup tournament with a close-fought win over Netherlands played at Belivere Oval, Hobart on Monday.

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards won the toss and decided to field first. Fred Klassen and other Netherlands seam bowlers struggled for rhythm against Shanto and Soumya Sarkar. Van Meekeren produced sharp delivery to get rid of Soumya Sarkar. Bangladesh openers added 43 runs for the opening wicket and ended the first six overs at 47 for 1.

Tim Pringle was bought into the attack and dismissed Shanto with a simple catch to van Beek. Netherlands kept the pressure on Bangladesh batters not allowing them to hit runs with ease. Van Beek dismissed Liton Das with another short delivery caught by Cooper at mid-off. Shariz Ahmed got the big wicket of Shakib AL Hasan as Leede timed the jump leaving Bangladesh in trouble. Bangladesh made 70 for 4 with rain arriving.

Van Meekeren produced lovely delivery to dismiss Yasir Ali. Nurul Hasan and Afif Hossain steadied the ship for Bangladesh keeping the momentum going. De Leede struck dismissing Nurul Hasan caught at fine leg. Afif and Nurul Hasan added 44 runs for the 6th wicket. Mossadek Hossain produced a lovely cameo to help Bangladesh post below par total of 144 for 8.

Chasing 145 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Netherlands as Taskin Ahmed got wickets of Vikramjit Singh and Bas Leede off successive deliveries. Colin Ackermann showed intent putting pressure on Bangladesh bowlers. Max O Dowd was run out while trying to take a second run with a lovely throw by Shakib AL Hasan and gathered by Nurul Hasan.

Netherlands lost their fourth wicket cheaply as Tom Cooper was run out while trying to take a third run with a sensational throw by Shanto and gather by Nurul Hasan. Colin Ackermann showed intent keeping pressure on Bangladesh bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Netherlands scored 32 for 4.

Ackermann showed his class against disciplined Bangladesh bowling line-up. Shakib AL Hasan struck getting rid of captain Scott Edwards with simple catch to Hasan Mahmud. Ackermann and Edwards added 44 runs for the 5th wicket. Hasan Mahmud dismissed Tim Pringle with a stunning delivery leaving Netherlands in deep trouble. With the scoreboard reading 66 for 6, rain arrived again.

After the rain break, Netherlands lost the wickets of Logan Van Beek and Shariz Ahmed quickly. Ackermann completed fifty off 39 balls keeping Netherlands afloat. He was soon dismissed by Taskin Ahmed caught by Mossadek Hossain. Paul Van Meekeren provided some hope with lusty hitting while Fred Klassen gave good support.

Soumya Sarkar dismissed Van Meekeren to give Bangladesh 9 run win. It was a superb effort by Ackermann but there was no support. Van Meekeren and Fred Klassen added 34 runs for the final wicket.

Bangladesh 144 for 8 in 20 overs ( Afif Hossain 38, Shanto 25, van Meekeren 2/21) beat Netherlands 135 in 20 overs ( Ackermann 62, Taskin Ahmed 4/25) by 9 runs.

For his match-winning spell of 4 for 25, Taskin Ahmed was named the player of the match award.








Bangladesh beat the Netherlands by 9 runs
