FIFA World Cup 2022 Day 2: Saudi Arabia stuns Argentina with comeback win
Saudi Arabia produced the biggest upset of FIFA World Cup history as they defeated Argentina in the Group C game played at Lusail Iconic Stadium, Lusail on 22 November 2022.
Argentina began the game with attacking moves putting
pressure on Saudi Arabia’s defense. Lionel Messi converted the penalty into a goal
after being awarded via VAR in the 10th minute to give Argentina a 1-0
lead. Lionel Messi scored a brilliant shot the referee called it offside. Di Maria also scored a goal but it was disallowed
due to another offside. Argentina kept more pressure on the Saudi defense with consistent
shots.
Argentina was denied another goal as Martinez scored but it
was called offside. Saudi Arabia showed some fight controlling the possession. The
goal was converted again Argentina's attackers was offside. There some added time
after the allotted 45 minutes. Saudi decided to bring in Nawaf Alabid and out Salman
Al Faraj. At the end of the first half, Argentina had a 1-0 lead.
Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina with a lovely assist by AL Burakin
and a great goal by Saleh Alsheri in the 48th minute to level the
scores at 1-1. Al Dawsari produced a right-foot shot curling into a corner during the 53rd minute as Saudi Arabia took a 2-1 lead. Argentina bought in
Lisandro Martinez and substitute Romero. There were 2 more substitutions for Messi
and Co.
Argentina tried their best to level the scores but Saudi
Arabia goalkeeper Al Owais made a brilliant save. Abuleah Almaki was awarded a yellow card for reckless challenge. Argentina bought another substitute as
Acuna in while Nicolas Taglifaco out. Both teams looked to put pressure on
others but Saudi Arabia's goalkeeper was up to the mark with his goalkeeping.
Ali Albulhayi was awarded second yellow card for taking too
long for free kick. Saudi Arabia had two more players getting warnings for rash
challenges. Saudi Arabia substituted two players to put pressure on Argentina's
players. Argentina produced some lovely shots on goal but Al Owais denied them
the equalizer. Saudi Arabia ended Argentina 36 games streak as they won 2-1. There
were 10 minutes of added time in the second half.
Argentina dominated the possession with 70 percent as
compared to 30 by Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia had 6 yellow cards and had more lack
of composure than Argentina.
