Hylo Open 2022: Kidambi Srikanth qualify for the semi-finals
The Indian shuttlers had a mixed day with only Kidambi Srikanth and the women’s doubles pair of Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand progressing into the semi-finals of the Super 300 Hylo Open played in Germany on Saturday.
French Open winners Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty lost to
Ben Lane and Sean Vendy of England in two straight games. It was a closely
fought affair from both pairs before Satwik and Chirag had an 11-9 lead at the
interval. After the break, Lane, and Vendy made a strong comeback with lovely
shots putting the Indian pair under pressure. The England pair won the first game
easily at 21-17.
The second game was a closely fought start before the Indian
pair committed unforced errors. At the mid-game interval, Vendy and Lane had an 11-7 lead at the interval. After the break, it was one-way traffic as the
England pair won the second game easily by 21-12 to knock out the Indian pair.
Gayatri Gopichand and Tressa Jolly defeated Hsu Y-C and Lin
W-c of Chinese Taipei in three games. The Indian pair put up an excellent display
winning the first game by 21-17 before Hsu and Lin made a strong comeback to win the second game by 21-18. The deciding game saw Tressa and Gayatri dominate their
opponents winning it easily at 21-8 to move into the semi-finals. They will now
face Benyappa and Nuntakam Aimsaard of Thailand.
Malvika Bansod struggled against Georgia Tunjung of Indonesia
losing the match in two straight games. The first game was a closely fought
affair right from the word go with both players taking alternate points. Tunjung
had a slender 11-10 at the mid-game interval. After the break, the match looked even
with both players taking alternate points till 17-17. The Indonesian took 4
points in succession to win the first game at 21-17.
The second game saw Bansod struggle as she committed lots of
unforced errors losing by 10-21 to be knocked out of the tournament. She
defeated 17th-ranked Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in the second round.
Kidambi Srikanth provided a dominating display as he
defeated higher-ranked Jonathan Christie of Indonesia in two straight games.
Both players tried to get used conditions before Srikanth showed intent with
smashes. At the mid-game interval, the Indian had an 11-10 lead. After the break,
Srikanth looked in great touch winning the first game easily at 21-13.
Srikanth had a decent start in the second game also putting
Christie under pressure with his smashes. At the break, the Indian had an 11-9
lead. After the break, Christie provided great character, but Srikanth held his
nerves to win the second game by 21-19. He will now face Anthony Gingting of
Indonesia.
