ICC T20 World Cup 2022 SF 1: Pakistan reach the finals with an easy win
The Pakistan Cricket Team proved everybody wrong with an easy win over New Zealand in the first semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on Wednesday.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided
to bat first. Finn Allen was given out by the umpire but on review, it was
overturned to not out as there was an edge. Shaheen Shah Afridi then got rid of
Allen's very next ball to dent the New Zealand batting. Devon Conway showed some
intent with aggressive shots putting pressure on Pakistan's bowling while
Williamson steadied keeping the scoreboard ticking. Shahbad Khan produced a
direct hit to dismiss Conway. New Zealand scored 38 for 2 at the end of the first
six overs.
Conway and Williamson added 34 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Mohammad Nawaz got rid of dangerous Glenn Phillips with a simple return
catch to leave New Zealand in trouble. Kane Williamson struggled against disciplined
Pakistan bowling while Daryl Mitchell kept the momentum going for New Zealand
taking on Shahbad Khan.
Williamson and Mitchell kept the scoreboard ticking with
singles and doubles also hitting occasional boundaries. Shaheen Shah Afridi shattered
the stumps of Williamson trying to sweep. Williamson and Mitchell added 68 runs
for the 4th wicket. Mitchell kept the composure for New Zealand with a well-complied fifty off 32 balls. James Neesham was not able to hit big shots
against top-quality Pakistan pace bowling. Mitchell and Neesham added unbeaten 35
runs for the 5th wicket. At the end of 20 overs, New Zealand scored
152 for 4.
Chasing 153 runs to win, Babar Azam was given a reprieve
early dropped by Devon Conway. After the drop chance, Azam and Rizwan kept the
pressure on Kiwi pacers including Trent Boult, Southee, and Ferguson. Both
Pakistan openers made batting look easy. At the end of the first six overs,
Pakistan made 55 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Babar and Rizwan looked
comfortable against Santer and Sodhi. New Zealand captain Williamson reviewed
the decision, but it was upheld going over the stumps. Trent Boult missed a golden
run chance to dismiss Babar Azam. Babar and Rizwan kept the momentum going for
Pakistan.
Babar completed his maiden fifty this tournament off 38
balls and kept Pakistan on course for a win. Boult struck for New Zealand
dismissing Babar with a simple catch to Mitchell at long-on. Babar and Mitchell
added 105 runs laying a strong foundation for a win.

and made batting look easy. Mohammad Rizwan reached fifty off 36 balls. Boult
got rid of Rizwan with a lovely catch by Phillips. Haris showed his composure
with some lovely hitting before being dismissed caught by Allen at short fine
leg. New Zealand's fielding was not great as they dropped catches and run-outs in
important moments. Shan Masood hit the winning run as Pakistan won the match by
7 wickets with 5 balls to spare.
