Super 12 Group 1: New Zealand qualify for the semi-finals with a thumping win
New Zealand became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals stage with a thumping win over Ireland played at Adelaide Oval on Friday.
Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie won the toss and decided to
field first. It was a decent start for Ireland bowlers as they kept Conway and
Finn Allen quiet. Allen took on Gareth Delany with 3 boundaries in an over.
Allen then upped the ante with attacking strokes maintaining the pressure on
Ireland bowlers. Adair struck dismissing dangerous Allen providing an easy catch
to Hand at mid-off. Allen and Conway put on 52 runs for the opening wicket in quick
time. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand made 52 for 1.
Conway and Kane Williamson struggled against disciplined Ireland
bowling. Williamson was not able to time the ball before taking the attack with
big shots. Delany got the big wicket of Conway with a simple catch to Adair at
long-on. Conway and Williamson added 44 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Glenn Phillips continued his aggressive form putting
pressure on Ireland bowlers, especially Delany. Delany struck getting rid of
dangerous Phillips caught by Dockrell. Williamson just looked in sensational
touch keeping the momentum going for New Zealand. Daryl Mitchell joined the
party taking singles and not allowing bowlers to settle.
Williamson completed fifty off 32 balls and maintained the
pressure on Ireland's bowlers. Joshua Little became the 2nd Ireland
bowler to take a hattrick dismissing Williamson, Jimmy Neesham, and Mitchell
Santer to put a brake on the Kiwi batting lineup. Williamson and Mitchell added 60
runs for the 4th wicket. At the end of 20 overs, New Zealand posted
185 for 6.
Chasing 186 runs to win, Paul Stirling looked in decent touch
putting pressure on the Kiwi bowling lineup. On other hand, Andrew Balbirnie struggled
not able to time the ball. At the end of the first six overs, Ireland scored 39 for
0.
After the field restrictions, Balbirnie and Stirling took on
Santer and Ish Sodhi with attacking shots. Santer gave a much-needed breakthrough
dismissing Balbirnie taking an inside edge onto the stumps. Balbirnie and Stirling
added 68 runs for the opening wicket. The New Zealand spinners strangled Ireland's
batters with disciplined lines and lengths.
After Santer and Sodhi grabbed two wickets each, Southee, and Ferguson
never allowed the Ireland batters to score runs easily. It was a dominating
performance by Kiwi bowlers as they restricted Ireland to 150 for 9.
New Zealand 185 for 6 in 20 overs ( Williamson 61, Allen 32,
Joshua Little 3/22) beat Ireland 150 for 9 in 20 overs ( Stirling 37, Balbirnie
30, Ferguson 3/22, Santer 2/26) by 35 runs.
For his 61 off 35 balls, Kane Williamson was named the
player of the match award. New Zealand finished the league stage at top of the
table with 7 points.
