Super 12 Group 2: India thrash Zimbabwe to top group
The Indian Cricket Team registered a dominating win over Zimbabwe in a one-sided affair to top Group 2 played at Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on Sunday.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was a cautious start as KL Rahul struggled initially against Ngavara.
Rohit and KL Rahul showed intent putting some pressure on Zimbabwe pacers. Muzabrani
got the breakthrough by dismissing Rohit Sharma with a simple catch to Wellington Masakadza.
Virat Kohli continued his impressive form with lovely shots
while KL Rahul looked solid enough. At the end of six overs, India scored 46
for 1. Kohli and Rahul maintained the pressure on Zimbabwe bowlers keeping the scoreboard
ticking with singles and hitting boundaries. Sean Williams provided the
breakthrough by dismissing Virat Kohli caught by Burl at long-off. Kohli and Rahul
added 60 runs for the 2nd wicket. KL Rahul looked impressive with
his shots completing fifty off 34 balls. He then tried to clear another big
shot but caught by Masakadza at long-off.
Rishabh Pant playing his first game of the tournament was
brilliantly caught by Ryan Burl at long-on. Surya Kumar Yadav showed intent
right from word go playing aggressive shots not allowing the Zimbabwe bowlers
to settle. Hardik Pandya also hit some lovely shots but struggled with his
timing.
Surya Kumar hammered the Zimbabwe pacers with paddle sweeps
and innovative shots. Hardik Pandya was caught by Muzabrani at short third man.
Pandya and Surya added 65 runs for the 5th wicket.
Surya Kumar completed fifty off just 23 balls and dominated
the Zimbabwe bowlers, especially pacers to help the Indian team post an imposing
total of 186 for 5 in 20 overs.
Chasing 187 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for
Zimbabwe as Wesley Medhevere was caught brilliantly by Kohli. Arshdeep Singh produced
a beauty to dismiss Regis Chakabva to leave Zimbabwe in trouble. Sean Williams
and Craig Ervine showed intent with aggressive shots before Mohammed Shami
grabbed the wicket of Williams caught by Kumar at third man. At the end of the first six overs, Zimbabwe struggled at 28 for 3.
Hardik Pandya dismissed Ervine with a lovely return catch to
leave Zimbabwe struggling. Shami then dismissed Mungyonga rattling the Zimbabwe
batting. Sikander Raza and Ryan Burl provided some entertainment taking on R
Ashwin and Axar Patel. Ashwin eventually got his first wicket dismissing Ryan
Burl. Burl and Raza added 60 runs for the 6th wicket. R Ashwin, Axar
Patel, and Hardik Pandya did the job for India skittling Zimbabwe cheaply.
India 186 for 5 in 20 overs ( Surya Kumar Yadav 61*, Rahul
51, Sean Williams 2/9) beat Zimbabwe 115 in 17.2 overs ( Ryan Burl 35, Raza 34,
Ashwin 3/22, Shami 2/14) by 71 runs.
For his unbeaten 61 off 25 balls, Surya Kumar Yadav was
named the player of the match award. India finished top of Group 2 and will
face England in the semi-finals on 10th November at Adelaide Oval.
