Super 12 Group 2: Netherlands sends South Africa with a shocking win
Netherlands stunned South Africa to knock them out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in a do-or-die match played at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided
to field first. Stephen Myburgh showed intent on keeping pressure on South African
bowlers, especially Kagiso Rabada. O Dowd gave good support to Myburgh. At the
end of the first six overs, Netherlands made 48 for 0.
Markram provided breakthrough for South Africa dismissing
Myburgh with an easy catch to Rossouw. Myburgh and O Dowd added 58 runs laying a strong foundation for a decent total. Tom Cooper joined in with O Dowd putting
pressure on SA bowlers. Maharaj got rid of O Dowd as Rabada took a good catch.
O Dowd and Cooper added 39 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Colin Ackermann provided some much-needed runs in the death
overs keeping momentum for Netherlands along with Scott Edwards. Ackermann and Edwards
added unbeaten 35 runs for the 5th wicket. At the end of 20 overs, Netherlands
posted 158 for 4.
Chasing 159 runs to win, de Kock began the innings well with
aggressive shots before Klassen got rid of de Kock with a simple catch to
Edwards. Temba Bavuma and Rossouw showed intent with positive shots before Van Meekeren
dismissed Bavuma bowled around the legs. At the end of the first six overs, South
Africa scored 39 for 2.
The Netherlands bowlers kept tight leash on South African
batters. Glover grabbed the wicket of Rossouw with a simple catch to O Dowd. David
Miller and Markram showed intent on keeping the scoreboard ticking for South Africa. A
stunning catch by Myburgh resulted in the wicket of Markram shifting the momentum.
Miller looked decent enough with aggressive shots along with Heinrich Klassen.
Van der Merwe took a stunning catch to dismiss Miller
shifting the momentum in favor of Dutch. Glover struck in the same over getting rid
of Wayne Parnell. Netherlands bowlers kept picking wickets at regular
intervals. Keshav Maharaj struggled with his injury. De Leede took the wicket
of Klassen to leave SA on brink of a famous win.
With 26 runs required off the final over, Rabada and Maharaj
tried their best but it was not enough as Netherlands beat South Africa by 13
runs.
Netherlands 158 for 4 in 20 overs ( Ackermann 41*, Myburgh 37,
Maharaj 2/27) beat South Africa 145 for 8 in 20 overs ( Rossouw 25, Glover 3/9,
Klassen 2/20) by 13 runs.
For his unbeaten 41 off 26 balls, Colin Ackermann was named
the player of the match. Netherlands made it into 2024 directly finishing 4th
in Group 2.
