Super 12 Group 2: Pakistan defeat Bangladesh to progress into semi-finals
Pakistan entered the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 with a narrow win over Bangladesh in a do-or-die match played at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Bangladesh captain Shakib AL Hasan won the toss and decided
to bat first. Najmul Shanto and Liton Das began the innings with positive
intent before Shaheen Shah Afridi got rid of Das with a good catch by Shan
Masood. Shanto and Soumya Sarkar showed intent with aggressive shots not
allowing the Pakistan bowlers to settle. At the end of the first six overs,
Bangladesh made 40 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Sarkar and Shanto kept the
momentum going taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Shahbad Khan dismissed
Sarkar with a good catch by Shan Masood. Sarkar and Shanto added 52 runs for
the 2nd wicket. Khan then got rid of Shakib AL Hasan with a controversial
LBW decision. The umpire gave out but on replay, it showed there was an edge, but
the decision stood it out.
Shanto looked impressive completing fifty off 46 balls. He
was soon dismissed by Ifkthitar to leave Bangladesh on the backfoot. Shaheen
Shah Afridi returned to his best dismissing Mossadek Hossain with a yorker. He
then dismissed Nurul Hasan as Muhammed Haris took a good catch. Nasum Ahmed and
Afif Hossain provided some vital runs in the end to help Bangladesh post 127
for 8 in 20 overs.
Pakistan's fielding and catching was not up to the mark.
It was a superb bowling effort by Pakistan bowlers to restrict Bangladesh to a
modest total on a sluggish pitch.
Chasing 128 runs to win, Pakistan could have gotten off to the
worst start as Nurul Hasan dropped a simple chance of getting rid of Mohammad
Rizwan. Babar Azam and Rizwan struggled against disciplined Bangladesh bowling.
At the end of the first six overs, Pakistan's openers only scored 35 for 0.
Babar and Rizwan struggled against Bangladesh bowling before
Nasum Ahmed grabbed the breakthrough dismissing Babar caught by Mustafizur
Rahman at short third man. Babar and Rizwan added 57 runs for the opening wicket.
Ebadot Hossain struck getting rid of Rizwan caught by Shanto at a backward point
to leave Pakistan struggling.
Mohammad Nawaz was promoted to number 3 and struggled
against Bangladesh bowlers. Liton Das produced a direct hit to dismiss Nawaz to
leave Pakistan in some trouble. Mohammad Haris and Shan Masood provided some
lusty blows keeping pressure on Bangladesh's bowling. Shakib eventually got rid
of Haris caught by Nasum Ahmed. Shan Masood kept his nerves as Pakistan won the
match by 5 wickets.
Pakistan 128 for 5 in 18.1 overs ( Rizwan 32, Haris 31,
Nasum Ahmed 1/14) beat Bangladesh 127 for 8 in 20 overs ( Shanto 54, Shaheen
Shah Afridi 4/22) by 5 wickets.
For his figures of 4 for 22 in 4 overs, Shaheen Shah Afridi
was named the player of the match. They finished 2nd in Group 2 and
will play New Zealand in the first semi-finals on 9th November at
Adelaide Oval.
