FIH Nations Cup 2022: Indian women register second win
The Indian women’s hockey team registered a closely fought win over Japan in FIH Nations Cup tournament played in Valencia, Spain on 12th December.
Salima Tete scored a field goal in the 5th minute
to give India a 1-0 lead. Japan showed their aggression with some lovely
attacking moves but Savita Punia produced lovely saves. It was a close affair
as both teams got chances. At the end of the first quarter, India led 1-0.
The second quarter saw the Indian team putting pressure on Japan's
defense. They earned a penalty corner, but the shot was cleared by Japan. At the
end of the first half, India still led 1-0.
It was another brilliant start by the Indian team in the third
quarter with a penalty corner, but the shot was well wide. Japan kept the
pressure on Indian defense. Beauty produced a stunning field goal in the 40th
minute to double the lead for India. Sushila Chanu was awarded a green card
which meant she was ruled out for 2 minutes. Savita Punia produced another lovely
save. The Indian team got penalty corners but could not convert them into chances.
At the end of 3rd quarter, India led 2-0.
Japan began the fourth quarter on an aggressive note as Rui
Takashima scored in the 49th minute. It deflected from India’s
teammate going past Savita Punia. Both teams played end-to-end hockey putting
pressure. India went down to 10 players as Sangita was awarded a green card. The Indian team got penalty corners but could not convert chances into goals.
Japan got decent penalty corners in the end moments of the game,
but Indian midfielder Monika was alert to the task as Savita was beaten. Japan showed
their skills to put pressure, but Indian players held onto their nerves to win
the match by 2-1.
The Indian team is currently at the number 1 spot in Group B
with 4 points. They cruised past Chile by 3-1 in their opening match on 11th
December. India will take on South Africa in their last group match on 14th
December.
