Indian women’s hockey team beat Spain to win FIH Nations Cup

 The Indian women’s hockey team register a close-fought win over hosts Spain in the finals of FIH Nations Cup 2022 played at Valencia on 17 December 2022.

Spain looked confident with an early penalty corner, but Savita Punia produced a stunning save. Gurjit Kaur converted the first penalty corner into a goal in the 6th minute to give India a 1-0 lead. India controlled the game with lovely possession making life tough for Spain. At the end of the first quarter, India led 1-0.

The second quarter began well for the Indian team with a penalty corner, but Gurjit Kaur could not convert to double the lead. Spain kept the pressure on India’s defense which eventually resulted in the penalty corner. The penalty corner goes wide off the goalpost. Despite Spain's regular attacks, the Indian defense looked solid not allowing them to level the score. At the end of the first half, India still led 1-0.

India began the third quarter with a penalty corner but Spain's goalkeeper saved it twice but the rebound shot was not converted into a goal. Spain kept pressure with attacking moves but Savita Punia showed her class with brilliant saves. The rebound shot went into the goal, but India decided to review the decision. The goal was disallowed as the decision was overturned. Udita was awarded a green card and sent for 2 minutes. At the end of the third quarter, the scores remained 1-0.

Spain's goal was disallowed again as they were frustrated with the decision. Spain blew the review early in the third quarter. Spain continued to push the Indian defense with another penalty corner but a brilliant block by Lalremsaimi denied them an equalizer. The hosts kept the pressure but the Indian defense remained solid. Savita Punia produced another superb save from a penalty corner by Spain. It was a very close fight as the Indian team won the title by just 1 goal.

With this win, the Indian team qualified for the FIH Pro Hockey League tournament. Indian women’s team topped the group beating Chile, Japan, and South Africa.

The semi-finals was a closely fought affair as the Indian team defeated Ireland in a penalty shootout after a draw in regular time.
