Hockey World Cup 2023: India starts the tournament on a winning note
The Indian men’s hockey team started their Hockey World Cup tournament with a comfortable win over Spain played at Birsa Munda International Stadium, Rourkela on 13 January 2023.

produced a lovely shot, but P Sreejesh denied them a goal with a superb save. India
made four circle penetrations while Spain attempted 3 times. A superb rebound
goal by Amit Rohidas in the 12th minute gave India a 1-0 lead and
ended the first quarter with the same scoreline.
The second quarter was an aggressive beginning by both teams
but did not yield any results. Spain earned a penalty corner, but Krishna Pathak
produced a stunning save. India doubled their lead as Hardik went and dribbled before
it deflects from the Spanish defender in the 26th minute. Akashdeep
Singh was awarded a green card which ended in a 2-minute suspension. At the end
of the first half, India led 2-0.
India began the 3rd quarter on an attacking move earning
a penalty stroke. Captain Harmanpreet Singh hits straight to the goalkeeper and
does not go across the line. The Indian team put enough pressure on the Spain team
with regular attacking moves. India earned another penalty corner, but
Harmanpreet Singh shot went wide. At the end of the third quarter, the Indian team
still led 2-0.

saves. The Indian defense looked enough and did not allow Spain to use a one-man advantage.
Abhishek came back after a 10-minute suspension as India's
defense remained solid enough. India eventually won the match by 2-0 to earn
their opening win in Group D. They will now play England in their next encounter
on 15th January.

defeating South Africa by 1-0. The second match saw Australia putting up a
dominating display winning by 8 goals to nil against France.
