Hockey World Cup 2023: Schedule of knockout stage
The Group stage ended with Australia, Belgium, Germany winning their matches with ease while the match between Argentina and France ended in a thrilling 5-5 draw.
Here we look at the schedule of the knockout stage.
Group A
Australia qualified into the quarterfinals directly with 7
points. They began the tournament with a resounding 5-0 win over France in the opening match before a thrilling 3-3 draw against Argentina played on 16 January.
They produced a dominating performance in their final group
game with a thrashing 9-2 win over South Africa on 20 January 2023.
Argentina and France made it into crossover matches.
Argentina finished 2nd in the points table with a 1-0 win over South
Africa, a 3-3 draw against Australia, and a 5-5 draw against France.
France was hammered by Australia with a 0-8 loss before
winning a close-fought match against South Africa by 2-1. They ended the league
stage with a thrilling 5-5 draw in the final league match played today.
Group B
Defending Champions Belgium looked in great touch so far.
They started the tournament with a resounding 5-0 win over South Korea, a 2-2 draw
against Germany, and a 7-1 win over Japan to end the league stage with 7 points.
Belgium scored 14 goals and conceded only 3 goals.
Germany had the same number of points as of Belgium but due
to less goal difference, they finished 2nd. They began the tournament
with a 3-0 win over Japan, 2-2 draw against Germany, and 7-2 win over South Korea
to move into crossover.
South Korea lost two matches against Belgium by 0-5 and 2-7
against Germany. They defeated Japan in a closely fought affair by 2-1.
Group C
Netherlands had an outstanding tournament winning all 3 matches. They began the tournament with a 4-0 win over Malaysia, a 4-0 win over
New Zealand and hammering 14-0 over Chile. They move into the quarterfinals
directly.
Malaysia and New Zealand move into cross-over matches.
Malaysia won 2 matches against Chile by 3-2 and stunned higher-ranked side New
Zealand by 3-2 to finish 2nd. New Zealand lost two matches against
Netherlands and Malaysia but won against Chile by 3-1.
Group D
England finished at the top of Group D with 7 points. They
started the tournament with a 5-0 win over Wales, thrilling 0-0 draw against
India, and then a 4-0 win over Spain.
India had the same number of points as England but due to
less goal difference, they finished 2nd. They won against Spain by
2-0, 0-0 draw against England, and 4-2 win over Wales.
Spain won only 1 match in the Group stage defeating Wales by
5-1. They lost to India by 0-2 and England by 0-4.
