Malaysia Open 2023 Day 2: Good day for Indian shuttlers
The Indian shuttlers had a decent day with HS Prannoy and the men’s doubles pair of Chirag and Satwiksairaj progressed into the second round of the Super 750 Malaysia Open played on 11 January 2023.
The men’s section saw an all-India first-round match between
HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen. It was a closely fought affair between both Indians
right from the word go. Both players fought for each point in the first game
before Lakshya Sen won it by 24-22. The second game saw Prannoy showing his domination
before winning it easily at 21-12 to force the match into the decider.
Prannoy and Sen fought for each point in deciding the game. The
match ebbed and flowed before Prannoy won the decider by 21-18 to move into 2nd
round. He will now face CA Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia who defeated HK Vittinghus
in three thrilling games. The Indonesian won the first game easily by 21-11
before Vittinghus made a strong comeback to win the second game easily by 21-16.
The third game was a closely fought affair before Indonesian won it by 25-23.
Kidambi Srikanth lost to Kenta Nishimoto in straight games
during the first round by 19-21, 14-21 to be knocked out of the tournament.
The men’s doubles pairing of Satwik and Chirag Shetty won
their opening match with a straight-game win over Choi S G and Kim W H of South
Korea. Despite a slow start by the Indian pair, they showed their class with
strong smashes putting the South Korean pair under pressure. Chirag and Satwik took
the lead at the interval and continued their dominating performance to win the
first game by 21-16.
The second game was a one-sided affair as the Indian pair
never looked back and won it easily by 21-14 to move into the second round. They
will now face MS Fikri and B Maulana of Indonesia.
Returning from an injury, PV Sindhu suffered a closely
fought loss to Carolina Marin in the first round. It was a one-sided affair as
Marin won the first game easily at 21-12. Sindhu made a strong comeback into
the match with dominating performance with a 21-10 win in 2nd game.
The third and deciding game did not go according to plan as
Marin was the better play winning by 21-15.
