New Zealand win historic ODI series on Pakistan soil

 New Zealand registered 2 wickets win over Pakistan in the third and deciding ODI match played at National Stadium, Karachi on 13 January 2023.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as they lost the early wicket of Shan Masood via review for caught behind. The umpire called not out but on review, it was overturned to out. Babar Azam was stumped again in the series for the third successive time leaving Pakistan in trouble. Fakhar Zaman and Rizwan looked cautious against disciplined New Zealand bowling. At the end of the first 10 overs, Pakistan made 37 for 2.

Fakhar and Rizwan showed intent keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and taking singles not allowing the NZ bowlers to settle. Fakhar completed half-century off 65 balls while Rizwan kept his composure with fifty off 53 balls. Ish Sodhi provided the much-needed breakthrough in getting rid of Rizwan. Rizwan and Fakhar added 154 runs for the 3rd wicket. Fakhar Zaman looked composed reaching century off 120 balls. He struggled with his injury and a superb direct throw by substitute Henry Nicholls resulted in the wicket of Zaman.

Haris Sohail was hit by a bouncer by Lockie Ferguson while Salman Agha looked decent enough. Henry Nicholls produced another direct hit to dismiss Sohail to leave Pakistan in trouble. Sohail and Agha added 34 runs for the 5th wicket. New Zealand bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals despite Salman Agha’s knock. At the end of 50 overs, Pakistan posted 280 for 9.

Chasing 281 runs to win, Finn Allen and Devon Conway provided an aggressive start especially by Allen putting pressure on Pakistan's bowling. Kamran Ghulam came as a concussion substitute for Sohail. Tayyab Tahir produced a superb direct hit to dismiss Allen. Allen and Conway added 43 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first 10 overs, New Zealand made 44 for 1.

Williamson and Conway steadied the ship for New Zealand keeping the scoreboard ticking. Conway continued from where he left from the last match completing his fifty off 60 balls. Salman Agha got the breakthrough dismissing Conway with a simple catch to Shan Masood. Conway and Williamson added 65 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Daryl Mitchell and Williamson put up another vital partnership. Williamson completed half-century off 64 balls to steady the ship for New Zealand. Salman Agha got rid of Mitchell caught by Usama Mir. Mitchell and Williamson added 52 runs for the 3rd wicket. Pakistan bowlers made a strong comeback into the match by grabbing Williamson, Bracewell and Tom Latham to leave them in deep trouble at 206 for 6.

Glenn Phillips counterattacked the Pakistan bowling with brilliant shots against the spinners and pacers also. Mitchell Santer gave good support to him keeping them under pressure. Mohammed Nawaz eventually dismissed Santer. Santer and Phillips added 63 runs for the 8th wicket. Phillips completed fifty off 28 balls to keep New Zealand on course.

New Zealand won the match by 2 wickets as they chased down a tough target of 281. For his unbeaten 63 off 42 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes, Glenn Phillips was named the player of the match while Devon Conway was named the player of the series award for 153 runs including a century.
