ICC T20 Women’s World Cup 2023: Sri Lankan women stun hosts in a thriller.
The first match of the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match saw Sri Lankan women stun South Africa in a thrilling encounter played at Newlands, Cape Town on 10 February.
South African captain Sunne Luus won the toss and decided to
field first. It was a cautious start by Lankan openers Harshita Samawickrama
along with Sri Lankan captain Chamari Atthapthu. The left-handed Harshita tried
to pressure South African bowlers with attacking shots but could not do
it. At the end of the first six overs, the Sri Lankan women made 28 for 0.
De Klerk got the breakthrough dismissing Harshita with a
simple catch to Brits. Vishmi Gunaratne struggled with her timing while Chamari
looked to attack the South African bowlers. After the short break, the Sri
Lankan captain showed intent with boundaries at regular intervals. Gunaratne also
joined the party with boundaries against Shabnim Ismail.
Chamari completed half-century off 42 balls and upped the
ante with brilliant shots. A superb direct hit by Brits ended the innings for Gunaratne.
Chamari and Gunaratne added 86 runs for the 2nd wicket. Sri Lankan
captain Chamari also fell the same over with good catch by Klerk. South African
bowlers Shabnim Ismail and Kapp restricted the run flow in the death overs. At
the end of 20 overs, Sri Lankan women could post 129 for 4.
Chasing 130 runs to win, Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt
began the innings on a positive note before Ranasinghe got rid of Brits with
catch to Kanchana. South Africa looked in a good position at the end of six overs
with the scoreboard reading 38 for 1.
The Sri Lankan bowlers did not allow the South African
batters to score runs easily and kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Sunne
Luus looked impressive with her shots but the run rate increased. With 13 runs
required off the final over, the Sri Lankan bowler held nerves to register a
stunning 3-run win.
Sri Lankan women stunned the World with an impressive 3-run
win against hosts South Africa in Group 1 match. Other teams in the group include Australia,
New Zealand, and Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka women 129 for 4 in 20 overs ( Chamari 68, Gunaratne
35, Kapp 1/15) beat South African women 126 for 9 in 20 overs ( Luus 28, Ranaweera
3/18, Ranasinghe 2/20) by 3 runs.
For her 68 off 50 deliveries, Chamari Atthapathu was named
