ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023: Indian women’s team register second win.
The Indian Women’s Cricket Team registered a comfortable 6-wicket win in the second Group match played at Newlands, Cape Town on 15 February 2023.
West Indies captain Hayley Mathews won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Mathews went cheaply with a simple
catch to Richa Ghosh off Pooja Vastkar. Campbell and experienced Taylor put the
bad deliveries away for boundaries as Indian fielding looked ordinary. At the
end of the first six overs, the West Indies women made 27 losing just 1 wicket.
Campbell and Taylor kept showing intent in hitting boundaries. Deepti
Sharma got two wickets in the same over dismissing both Campbell with lovely
catch by Mandhana and then Taylor with a review for LBW. The umpire gave not
out but on review, it was overturned to out. Taylor and Campbell added 73 runs
for 2nd wicket.
Chinelle Henry was run out as her bat was in the air trying
to take a second run. Shabika Gajnabi and Nation provided some momentum for West
Indies with some lovely strokes. Renuka Singh struck shattering the stumps of Gajnabi.
Gajnabi and Nation added 35 runs for the 5th wicket. It was a disciplined
bowling effort by Indian bowlers to restrict West Indies to 118 for 6 in 20
overs. Deepti Sharma became the first Indian bowler in the T20I format either for
men or women.
Chasing 119 runs to win, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma
provided a positive start putting pressure on West Indies bowlers. Ramharack
provided the breakthrough for the West Indies getting rid of Mandhana with a simple
stumping by Williams. Captain Mathews took a sharp caught and bowled chance to
dismiss Jemimah Rodrigues. At the end of the first six overs, the Indian women scored
41 for 2.
The experienced Taylor was taken off the field due to back
injury. Ramharack got her 2nd wicket dismissing Verma as Fletcher
took a good catch. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh steadied the ship
for the Indian team taking singles and hitting boundaries.
Richa Ghosh looked impressive with some lovely shots keeping
the momentum going for the Indian team. Right before the winning moment, Campbelle
took a good catch to dismiss Kaur. Kaur and Ghosh added 72 runs for the 4th
wicket. Richa Ghosh hit the winning shot helping Women in Blue register second
win with 11 balls to spare.
Indian women 119 for 4 in 18.1 overs ( Ghosh 44*, Kaur 33,
Ramharack 2/14) beat West Indies women 118 for 6 in 20 overs ( Taylor 42,
Campbell 30, Deepti Sharma 3/15) by 6 wickets.
For her 3 for 15 in 4 overs, Deepti Sharma was named the
player of the match award. Indian women register second successive win. They
will next take on England at Port Elizabeth on 18 Feb.
