IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals becomes first team to be knocked out of the tournament.

 

Delhi Capitals disappointing tournament came to an end as they lost their match against Punjab Kings in match 59 of IPL 2023 played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on 13 May.

DC captain David Warner won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the hosts as Ishant Sharma dismissed PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan with a simple catch. He then produced beauty to dismiss Liam Livingstone shattering the stumps. Prabhsimran Singh looked in decent touch putting pressure on DC bowlers. Axar Patel got rid of Jitesh Sharma to leave PBKS struggling. At the end of first six overs, PBKS made 46 for 3. With that the first timeout was called.

After the field restrictions, Singh put enough pressure on Delhi Capitals bowlers and not allowed them to settle. It was brilliant counterattacking innings by Singh as he completed fifty off 42 deliveries. Singh then toyed with DC bowlers with big shots and kept the momentum going for PBKS. On other hand, Sam Curran struggled. Pravin Dubey got breakthrough dismissing Sam Curran to end 72 runs partnership for the 4th wicket.

Prabhsimran Singh was at his best hitting DC bowlers to all over the park and completed his maiden IPL century off 61 deliveries and eventually dismissed for brilliant 103. His innings helped Punjab Kings post 167 for 7 in 20 overs on a pitch that helped the spinners.

Chasing 168 runs to win, David Warner looked in great touch putting enough pressure on Punjab Kings bowlers with attacking strokes along with Phil Salt. It was brilliant stroke making by both Delhi Capitals openers. At the end of first six overs, Delhi Capitals openers raced away to 65 for 0. With that the first timeout was called.

Harpreet Brar got the breakthrough for PBKS dismissing Salt to end 69 runs partnership for opening wicket. Warner showed his class with well complied half-century off 23 deliveries. Brar and Rahul Chahar broke the backbone of Delhi Capitals middle order to reduce them in tatters at 88 for 6.

Aman Khan and Pravin Dubey showed some resistance before Nathan Ellis got rid of Aman Khan with easy catch. Both batters added 30 runs for the 7th wicket to leave Delhi Capitals on brink of being eliminated.

Delhi Capitals batters struggled with their batting as they could muster 136 for 8. With this loss, Delhi Capitals tournament ended on bitter note.

Punjab Kings 167 for 7 in 20 overs ( Prabhsimran Singh 103, Ishant Sharma 2/27) beat Delhi Capitals 136 for 8 in 20 overs ( David Warner 54, Harpreet Brar 4/30) by 31 runs.

For his match winning century, Prabhsimran Singh was named the player of the match award. They move to number 6th spot with 12 points and 2 games remaining.
