IPL 2023 Eliminator: Akash Madhwal spell gives MI resounding win.
Mumbai
Indians showed their class with a resounding win over Lucknow Super Giants in
the eliminator played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 24 May 2023.
MI captain
Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Ishan
Kishan showed intent right from word go putting pressure on LSG bowlers. Naveen
UL Haq got the breakthrough dismissing MI captain Rohit Sharma with a simple
catch to Ayush Badoni. Rohit and Kishan added 30 runs for the opening wicket.
Yash Thakur
dismissed Ishan Kishan in his first over caught by Pooran. Cameron Green came
to the crease and put Krunal Pandya under immense with flurry of boundaries.
Suryakumar Yadav looked in great touch keeping the momentum going for MI. At
the end of first six overs, Mumbai Indians raced away to 62 for 2.
Surya and
Green kept the scoreboard ticking, taking singles and hitting boundaries
easily. Mumbai Indians made 70 for 2 at the end of first timeout. Both MI
batters did not allow LSG bowlers to settle and showed their class. Naveen
struck twice in the same over dismissing Surya with a slower delivery caught by
Gowtham at long-off while then deceived Green to shatter his stumps. Surya and
Green added 66 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Tilak Varma
came to the crease and showed his intent to keep the scoreboard ticking. At the
end of second timeout, MI scored 126 for 4. Varma looked in cracking touch with
big shots and kept scoreboard ticking. Yash Thakur got rid of Tim David that
went above the waist, but it was not called no-ball. Varma and David added 43
runs for the 5th wicket. Nehal Wadhera came as impact player and
lost wickets. He looked in sensational touch in final over against Yash Thakur
with 16 runs and was eventually caught by Bishnoi off final delivery. Mumbai
Indians posted 182 for 8 in 20 overs.
Chasing 183
runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Lucknow Super Giants as Kyle Mayers
came as an impact player along with Prerark Mankad. Akash Madhwal got the
breakthrough dismissing Mankad with a good catch by Hrithik Shokeen. MI
fielding was great enough not allowing LSG batters to score runs easily. Chris
Jordan struck getting rid of Mayers caught by Green at mid-on.
Nehal
Wadhera gave a reprieve to Marcus Stoinis as he could not judge the catch.
Stoinis showed intent against Shokeen and Piyush Chawla with some hits keeping
momentum going for LSG. Krunal Pandya came to bat at number 3. At the end of the
first six overs, LSG scored 54 for 2.
Stoinis and
Krunal Pandya kept the momentum going for LSG as they ended the first timeout
at 68 for 2. Piyush Chawla got breakthrough dismissing Krunal Pandya caught by
Tim David at long-on. Krunal and Stoinis added 46 runs for the 3rd
wicket. MI bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Madhwal looked
sharp with his bowling dismissing Ayush Badoni and dangerous Nicolas Pooran off
successive deliveries to derail LSG batting line up.
Marcus
Stoinis was run-out with a mix-up while trying to take second run along with
Deepak Hooda. Madhwal created enough panic as Mumbai Indians skittled LSG for
101 in 16.3 overs.
MI 182 for
8 in 20 overs ( Cameron Green 41, Naveen UL Haq 4/38, Yash Thakur 3/34) beat
LSG 101 in 16.3 overs ( Marcus Stoinis 40, Akash Madhwal 5/5) by 81 runs.
For his
figures of 5 for 5 in 3.3 overs, Akash Madhwal was named the player of the
match. MI will now take on GT during qualifier 2 on 26 May at Ahmedabad.
