IPL 2023: Gujarat Titans became the first team to qualify for the playoffs.
The
defending Champions Gujarat Titans registered a comphrensive win over Sunrisers
Hyderabad played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 15 May 2023.
Sunrisers
Hyderabad captain Aiden Markram won the toss and decided to field first. It was
a start as Bhuvneshwar Kumar grabbed an initial breakthrough in the very first ball
dismissing Wriddhiman Saha with good catch by Marco Jansen. Sai Sudharsan came
into playing XI and showed intent right from word go. Shubman Gill made the
batting look easy smashing SRH bowlers hitting four boundaries in an over. At
the end of the first six overs, GT raced away to 65 for 1.
After the
field restrictions, Gill maintained the pressure on SRH bowling with some lovely
shots against Markande. Sudharsan also looked in fine touch keeping the
scoreboard ticking. Gill completed his fifty off 22 deliveries. Gill and Sudharsan
continued to build momentum by taking singles and hitting boundaries with ease.
At the end of first timeout, GT made 89 for 1.
Gill and Sudharsan
made the batting look easy with brilliant batting display. After the second
timeout, Marco Jansen got much needed breakthrough taking catch of well-judged
catch by Natarajan. Sudharsan and Gill added 147 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
Sunrisers
Hyderabad made a strong comeback as they kept picked wickets at regular
intervals. On other hand, Shubman Gill looked composed and completed his maiden
IPL century off 56 balls. He was eventually dismissed after that with a good catch
by Abdul Samad. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 4 wickets in the final over including
run out getting rid of Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami. Noor Ahmed
was run out trying to steal a single. At the end of 20 overs, Gujarat Titans
made 189 for 9.
Shubman
Gill was substituted as Yash Dayal named as impact player for GT. On other hand,
Anmolpreet Singh came as impact player to replace T Natarajan. After the dropped
catch by Rahul Tewaita, Anmolpreet Singh could not make use of the chance and
caught by Rashid Khan at third man. Yash Dayal got the wicket of Abhishek Sharma
to put enough pressure on SRH batters. Mohammed Shami dismissed Rahul Tripathi
with a good catch by Rahul Tewaita and then got rid of SRH captain Aiden
Markram to leave SRH in tatters. At the end of the first six overs, SRH made 45
for 4.
Mohit
Sharma soon struck after the first timeout dismissing debutant Sanvir Singh to
leave SRH in deep trouble. Mohit got wickets of Abdul Samad and Marco Jansen
due poor strokes. Heinrich Klassen continued his superb form in the tournament
for SRH with attacking shots while Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave good support. At the
end of second timeout, SRH scored 97 for 7.
Klassen
showed his class with aggressive shots and completed half-century off 35
deliveries. Noor Ahmed had to leave the field due to a forceful shot hit by
Klassen. Shami was brought into the attack and got rid of dangerous Klassen with
a good catch by Miller at long on. Klassen and Bhuvneshwar added 68 runs for
the 8th wicket. GT bowlers kept it cool despite some good shots by
Markande at the end and won the match by 34 runs.
GT 189 for
9 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 101, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 5/30) beat SRH 154 for 9 in
20 overs ( Klassen 64, Shami 4/21, Mohit Sharma 4/28) by 34 runs.
For his 101
off 58 deliveries, Shubman Gill was named the player of the match award. With
this win, GT would finish at the top of points table and would play qualifier 1
on 23 May at Chennai.
