Malaysia Masters 2023: HS Prannoy wins first title of year

 

HS Prannoy produced a spirited performance to win the Super 500 Malaysia Masters in a thrilling encounter against Weng Hongyang of China played at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 28 May 2023.

The match began with the Chinese taking a decent lead in the initial stages of the first game before HS Prannoy made a strong comeback to level score at 9-9. Prannoy took a slender 11-10 lead at the mid-game interval. After the break, the match ebbed and flowed from one end to another before Indian held onto his nerves to win first game at 21-19.

It was another closely fought affair in the second game also with both players fighting for each point. The Chinese played attacking badminton and put Prannoy under pressure. At the mid-game interval, Weng took 11-9 lead. After the break, the Chinese looked in complete control and made life tough for the Indian winning second game easily at 21-13 to force the game into the decider.

Weng began the third and deciding game on a positive note with some lovely smashes to put Prannoy under pressure. The Indian showed great fighting spirit to make strong comeback with smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game interval, Prannoy had a slender 11-10 lead.

After the break, HS Prannoy looked good to the game away before Weng showed great fighting spirit to reduce the gap at 1 point by 16-17. The Indian played with aggression and put the Chinese under pressure with variety of strokes. Prannoy produced a lovely smash to win game and match by 21-18 to win his first title this year.

It was an amazing performance by Prannoy during this tournament. Right before Malaysia Masters, Prannoy achieved his highest rankings of 7 in rankings. He defeated Chou Tien Chen, Li SF, Kenta Nishimoto in the match that went right down the wire. Prannoy won the semi-finals as Christina Adianta retried hurt due to an injury.
