Ashes 2023 Test 1 Day 5: Australia seal epic win
The World
Champions Australia sealed an epic win in first Test match played at Edgbaston,
Birmingham on 20th June 2023. This series begins with the 3rd
cycle of World Test Championship for 2023/25.
Due to persistent
showers, the first session was entirely washed out. The match began in the
second session as Scott Boland put on important runs before Stuart Broad got
rid of night watchman with a simple catch to Jonny Bairstow. Boland and Usman
Khawaja added 32 runs for the 4th wicket. England bowlers kept it
straight not allowing Travis Head and Usman Khawaja to score runs easily. Moeen
Ali produce a peach to dismiss Head with easy catch to Joe Root at slips. Khawaja
looked solid enough, reaching fifty off 143 deliveries. Australia went into the
tea break with scoreboard reading 183 for 5.
Ollie
Robinson got the much-needed breakthrough dismissing Cameron Green taking
inside edge onto stumps. Green and Khawaja put on 49 runs for the 6th
wicket. Ben Stokes bowled his heart out with discipline lines not allowing Alex
Carey and Khawaja to hit runs easily. England captain Stokes delivered a
decisive blow getting rid of Khawaja taking the inside edge onto the stumps.
Joe Root
bowled with great control as Alex Carey struggled to hit runs. After dropping tough
chance, Root took stunning return catch to dismiss Carey leaving Australia on
the backfoot. Pat Cummins attacked Root with 2 sixes and 1 boundary bringing equation
down. Stokes could not grab a one-handed catch to get rid of Cummins. The
England captain Stokes took the second new ball with Robinson and Stuart Broad
giving their best. Nathan Lyon and Cummins kept ticking the scoreboard away to
put pressure back on the England bowlers.
Pat Cummins
hitting the winning runs to help Australia seal a remarkable 2 wicket win.
Cummins remained not out on 44. Cummins and Nathan Lyon put on an unbeaten 55
runs for the 9th wicket. It was a remarkable performance by both teams.
For his 141
and 65, Usman Khawaja was named the player of the match award. With this win,
Australia takes 1-0 lead. The second Test will be played at Lords, London from
28th June onwards.

3/55) and 282 for 8 in 92.3 overs (Khawaja 65, Cummins 44*, Broad 3/64, Ollie
Robinson 2/43) beat England 393 for 8 d in 78 overs (Joe Root 118*, Crawley 61,
Nathan Lyon 4/149) and 273 in 66.2 overs (Root 46, Brook 46, Cummins 4/63, Lyon
4/80) by 2 wickets.
