FIH Pro Hockey League 2022/23: India beat Great Britain in a thrilling encounter.

The Indian men’s hockey team registered a thrilling win over Great Britain in penalty shootout played at Lee Hockey Valley and Tennis Centre, London on 3 June 2023.

 Harmanpreet Singh scored from penalty corner in the 7th minute to give India 1-0 lead. Sam Ward helped Great Britain to level the score with dragflick in the 8th minute. It was an impressive performance by both teams. At the end of the first quarter, both teams were level at 1-1.

Mandeep Singh showed his class with a brilliant field goal in the 19th minute to give India 2-1 lead. Draper was awarded a green card that put Great Britain under pressure. The Indian team put enough pressure, but Great Britain defense looked solid enough. Great Britain attacked with full force and put some attacking moves on Indian team. Both teams earned penalty corners but could not convert them into goals. Sukhjeet Singh scored a brilliant field goal as Hardik Singh passes in the 28th minute to give India 3-1 lead. At the end of first half, India led 3-1.

The third quarter saw Great Britain attack and put the Indian team under pressure. Sam Ward scored his 2nd goal with a penalty corner in 40th minute to reduce margin at 2-3. Great Britain made life tough for the Indian team with attacking moves and kept pressure on the Indians. The hosts earned few penalty corners but not able to convert it. At the end third quarter, scores still read 3-2 in favor of India.

India began the final quarter on aggressive note putting Great Britain under pressure. Sam Ward equalized score as he was left unmarked in the 47th minute. Great Britain dominated the possession despite being man down. Dilpreet Singh passes it to Vivek and then to Abhishek who scored into a goal in the 50th minute to give India 4-3 lead. Sam Ward scored from field goal to help Great Britain level score at 4-4 in 53rd minute.

Great Britain got one player back after yellow card suspension. Krishna Pathak made a lovely save from counter-attacking move. Creed was shown green card showing descent. Both teams shot on goal to win the match but was not able to convert into goals. At the end of fourth quarter, the scores remained 4-4.

Calman scored first for Great Britain before Manpreet Singh converted for India. Wallace scored for Great Britain to give them a 2-1 lead. Harmanpreet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay and Abhishek showed their class helping Indian team win the shootout by 4-2. Krishna Pathak made a lovely save to deny Roper.

With this win, Indian team got two points including one for a draw and one for penalty shootout. They would next play against Netherlands on 7 June 2023.

 Indian ace shuttler produced a sensational display as she defeated Akane Yamaguchi in the quarterfinals played at Mushino Sports Forest Plaza, Tokyo on Thursday. The match started on an even term as Yamaguchi produced some brilliant smashes and put the Indian under pressure. Sindhu came back strongly with some lovely smashes and great netplay.
