ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers Day 2: Oman Stun Ireland

 

Oman stunned favorites Ireland in Group B of ICC ODI World Cup qualifiers played at Bulawayo Athletic Club, Bulawayo on 19 June 2023.

Oman captain Zeeshan Masqood won the toss and decided to field first. Andy McBrine and experienced Paul Stirling got off to a positive start keeping the scoreboard ticking putting pressure on Oman bowlers. Bilal Khan dismissed Paul Stirling caught by Aayan Khan. McBrine and Stirling added 51 runs for the opening wicket.

Soon after, Fayyaz Butt dismissed the other opener, Andy McBrine. At the end of first 10 overs, Ireland made 51 for 2. Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood got rid of Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie with simple catch to the wicketkeeper leaving Ireland in trouble at 69 for 3. Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker played with intent not allowing the Oman bowlers to settle. Aayan Khan dismissed dangerous Lorcan Tucker by shattering the stumps. Tucker and Tector added 38 runs for the 4th wicket.

Tector and Dockrell steadied the ship for Ireland keeping scoreboard ticking. Both batters looked impressive taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Tector completed half-century of 78 deliveries. He was dismissed for 52 by Jay Odedra. Tector and Dockrell added 79 runs for the 5th wicket.

Dockrell looked in great touch and completed half-century off 64 deliveries. Gareth Delany, Mark Adair made useful contributions. Delany and Dockrell added 31 runs for the 6th wicket. Dockrell and Hume put on unbeaten 41 runs for the 8th wicket as Ireland posted 281 in allotted 50 overs.

Chasing 282 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Oman as Jatinder Singh was dismissed by Mark Adair caught by Balbirnie. Ilyas and Kashyap Prajapati put pressure on Ireland bowlers as they made 53 at the end of 10 overs.

Both batters looked comfortable and did not allow Ireland bowlers to settle. After completing his fifty, Ilyas was dismissed by Delany. Ilyas and Prajapati added 94 runs for the 2nd wicket. Oman captain Zeeshan Masqood along with Prajapati put on another important partnership keeping scoreboard ticking.

Prajapati completed half-century off 54 deliveries and looked to guide Oman home along with Zeeshan. Joshua Little got the breakthrough dismissing Prajapati. Prajapati and Zeeshan added 63 runs for the 3rd wicket. Zeeshan completed his half-century off 58 deliveries along with Mohammad Nadeem made batting look easy. Joshua Little produced a beauty to dismiss Oman captain Zeeshan. Zeeshan and Mohammad Nadeem added 56 runs for the 4th wicket.

Mark Adair dismissed Ayaan Khan to end 37 runs partnership for the 5th wicket. Shoaib Khan and Mohammad Nadeem ensured that Oman beat Ireland by 5 wickets with 11 balls. It was the first ODI between these two nations.

Oman 285 for 5 in 48.1 overs ( Kashyap Prajapati 72, Zeeshan Maqsood 59, Joshua Little 2/47, Mark Adair 2/47) beat Ireland 281 for 7 ( Dockrell 91*, Fayyaz Butt 2/65, Bilal Khan 2/64) by 5 wickets.

For his 59 off 67 deliveries and 1 for 51, Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood was named the player of the match award.

In other match, Sri Lanka registered a thumping 175 runs win over UAE. Sri Lanka posted mammoth total of 355 for 6 in 50 overs and bowled UAE for 180. Hasranga picked 6 for 24 and scored quickfire 23.
