Ashes 2023 2nd Test 4th Day: Australia in a commanding position
The
Australian Cricket Team looks in a commanding position on the fourth day of
fourth test match played at Lords, London on 1 July 2023.
Starting on
the overnight score of 130 for 2, Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja began the day
on an attacking note keeping scoreboard ticking putting England bowlers on backfoot.
Stuart Broad used the short ball tactics to dismiss Usman Khawaja providing
simple catch to substitute Matthew Potts. Khawaja and Smith added 64 runs for
the 3rd wicket. Josh Tongue dismissed Steve Smith with short ball tactics
with easy catch to Zak Crawley.
The England
bowlers used the short ball tactics to full use. Stuart Broad dismissed Travis
Head with a sharp catch by Joe Root at short leg. Australia went into the lunch
break at 222 for 5.
After the
lunch break, Cameron Green and Alex Carey looked solid before Ollie Robinson used
the short ball to dismiss Green with good catch by Ben Duckett. Green and Carey
added 42 runs for the 6th wicket. Robinson struck again to get rid
of Alex Carey as Joe Root took produced superb catch at leg slip.
Pat Cummins
got a reprieve as Stokes delivered a no-ball. Stuart Broad eventually got rid
of Australian captain Cummins with easy catch to Duckett. Ben Stokes dismissed
Josh Hazlewood with good catch to Joe Root. Nathan Lyon arrived at the crease
with his injured calf getting standing ovation from the Lords crowd. Stuart
Broad eventually got rid of Lyon with an easy catch to Stokes. With that
wicket, umpires called it tea.
Chasing 371
runs to win, it was not an ideal start for England as Zak Crawley was dismissed
down the leg catch by Alex Carey. Mitchell Starc produced a peach to dismiss Ollie
Pope to leave hosts in trouble. Pat Cummins produced two brilliant deliveries,
getting rid of Joe Root with a simple catch to Warner and then shattering the
stumps of Harry Brook to leave England in tatters. England captain Ben Stokes
and Duckett provided some fight with some lovely shots. Both batters used their
feet against Head to keep the scoreboard ticking. Right before the stroke of
stumps, Duckett provided catch to Starc at fine leg, but it was called not out
on replays. Duckett completed his fifty of 62 deliveries. Stokes and Duckett
added an unbeaten 69 runs for the 5th wicket.
