Ashes 2023 2nd Test 5th Day: Australia beat England in a thrilling encounter.
Australia
held onto his nerves to survive scare of Ben Stokes brilliance on the fifth and
final day of 2nd Test match played at Lords, London on 2 July 2023.
Starting on
the overnight score of 114 for 4, Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes looked in good touch
with some lovely shots keeping the scoreboard ticking. Ben Stokes was given out
by the umpire but on review it was overturned to not out as it was hitting the
inside edge. After the reprieve Stokes completed half-century off 99 deliveries.
Josh Hazlewood provided breakthrough dismissing Duckett with well one-handed catch
by Alex Carey. Duckett and Stokes added 132 runs for the 5th wicket.
Soon after,
Jonny Bairstow was dismissed in a bizarre dismissal as Carey hit the stumps
while he was outside the crease to leave England struggling. Ben Stokes then
took charge with some big hitting and made the batting look easy. England
captain Stokes did not take singles and gave Broad one too two balls. It was a
superb batting display by Stokes completing his 100 off 142 deliveries. England
went into the lunch break at 243 for 6.
After the
lunch break, Stokes upped the ante with some lusty strokes and kept Australia
on the backfoot. Broad looked solid with his defensive technique against top
quality pace bowling. Stokes completed 150 off 197 deliveries keeping England
hopes alive. Josh Hazlewood eventually struck to dismiss Stokes as Alex Carey
took easy catch ending England winning hopes. Stokes and Broad added 108 runs
for the 7th wicket.
Ollie
Robinson, Stuart Broad fell cheaply afterwards against short deliveries. Josh
Tongue and James Anderson tried their best before Mitchell Starc shattered the
stumps of Tongue to bowl out England for 327. Australia won the match by 43
runs taking a 2-0 lead in the Ashes series.
Australia 416 in 100.4 overs (Steve Smith 110,
Head 77, Tongue 3/98, Robinson 3/100) and 279 in 101.5 overs (Khawaja 77, Broad
4/65) England 325 in 76.2 overs (Duckett 98, Brook 45*, Mitchell Starc 3/88,
Hazlewood 2/71) and 327 in 81.3 overs (Ben Stokes 155, Duckett 83, Pat Cummins
3/69, Josh Hazlewood 3/80) by 43 runs.
For his 110
and 34 in the match, Steve Smith was named the player of the match award. With
this win, Australia takes 2-0 lead in series. Both teams will now shift their
focus to play the 3rd Test from 6 July at Headingly, Leeds.
