ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers Match 3: Two Time World Champions fail to qualify for WC 2023
Scotland
registered a comprehensive win over two-time World Champion West Indies in
match 4 of Super Six stage played at Harare Sports Club, Harare on 1 July 2023.
Scotland
captain Richard Berrington won the toss and decided to field first. The
decision paid off as Brandon McMullen got rid of Johnson Charles with a good
catch by McBride. McMullen struck again to dismiss Brooks as Watts took sharp
catch at slips. McMullen took his third wicket with a easy return catch to
dismiss King leaving West Indies in trouble.
Chris Sole
produced a beauty to dismiss Kyle Mayers leaving West Indies reeling. At the
end of first 10 overs, West Indies looked in trouble at 43 for 4. Sharif
produced another lovely delivery to dismiss Shai Hope. Hope and Pooran added 30
runs for the 5th wicket. Watt struck again getting rid of Pooran
with a good catch by McBride putting enough pressure on West Indies batting.
Jason
Holder and Romario Shepherd steadied the ship for West Indies with some attacking
strokes not allowing Scotland bowlers to settle. Both batters looked composed
to keep scoreboard ticking. Watt dismissed well set Romario Shepherd with easy
catch to Sharif. Shepherd and Holder added 77 runs for the 7th
wicket. Chris Greaves dismissed well-set Jason Holder with a lovely delivery to
leave West Indies in massive trouble. It was a superb bowling effort by Scotland
bowlers skittling West Indies out for 181 in 43.5 overs.
Chasing 182
runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Scotland as Christopher McBride
could not open his account dismissed in the first over. Brandon McMullen and
Matthew Cross looked in decent touch against disciplined West Indies bowling.
At the end of the first 10 overs, Scotland made 40 for 1.
McMullen
and Cross kept the scoreboard ticking with ease. Both Scotland batters took
singles and hit boundaries. McMullen completed his half-century off 85
deliveries while Cross completed half-century off 68 deliveries.
Shephard
eventually got rid of McMullen with a good catch by Jospeh. Cross and McMullen
added 125 runs for the 2nd wicket. Matthew Cross looked comfortable
hitting the winning runs as Scotland registered a comprehensive 7 wicket win
with 39 balls to spare.
Scotland 185
for 3 in 43.3 overs ( Matthew Cross 74*, Brandon McMullen 69, Akeal Hossein
1/26) beat West Indies 181 in 43.5 overs ( Holder 45, Romario Shephard 36,
Brandon McMullen 3/32, Mark Watt 2/25) by 7 wickets.
For his
figures of 3 for 32 and 69 off 102 deliveries, Brandon McMullen was named the
player of the match award. With this loss, West Indies will not qualify for
World Cup 2023.
