ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers Match 3: Two Time World Champions fail to qualify for WC 2023

Scotland registered a comprehensive win over two-time World Champion West Indies in match 4 of Super Six stage played at Harare Sports Club, Harare on 1 July 2023.

Scotland captain Richard Berrington won the toss and decided to field first. The decision paid off as Brandon McMullen got rid of Johnson Charles with a good catch by McBride. McMullen struck again to dismiss Brooks as Watts took sharp catch at slips. McMullen took his third wicket with a easy return catch to dismiss King leaving West Indies in trouble.

Chris Sole produced a beauty to dismiss Kyle Mayers leaving West Indies reeling. At the end of first 10 overs, West Indies looked in trouble at 43 for 4. Sharif produced another lovely delivery to dismiss Shai Hope. Hope and Pooran added 30 runs for the 5th wicket. Watt struck again getting rid of Pooran with a good catch by McBride putting enough pressure on West Indies batting.

Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd steadied the ship for West Indies with some attacking strokes not allowing Scotland bowlers to settle. Both batters looked composed to keep scoreboard ticking. Watt dismissed well set Romario Shepherd with easy catch to Sharif. Shepherd and Holder added 77 runs for the 7th wicket. Chris Greaves dismissed well-set Jason Holder with a lovely delivery to leave West Indies in massive trouble. It was a superb bowling effort by Scotland bowlers skittling West Indies out for 181 in 43.5 overs.

Chasing 182 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Scotland as Christopher McBride could not open his account dismissed in the first over. Brandon McMullen and Matthew Cross looked in decent touch against disciplined West Indies bowling. At the end of the first 10 overs, Scotland made 40 for 1.

McMullen and Cross kept the scoreboard ticking with ease. Both Scotland batters took singles and hit boundaries. McMullen completed his half-century off 85 deliveries while Cross completed half-century off 68 deliveries.

Shephard eventually got rid of McMullen with a good catch by Jospeh. Cross and McMullen added 125 runs for the 2nd wicket. Matthew Cross looked comfortable hitting the winning runs as Scotland registered a comprehensive 7 wicket win with 39 balls to spare.

Scotland 185 for 3 in 43.3 overs ( Matthew Cross 74*, Brandon McMullen 69, Akeal Hossein 1/26) beat West Indies 181 in 43.5 overs ( Holder 45, Romario Shephard 36, Brandon McMullen 3/32, Mark Watt 2/25) by 7 wickets.

For his figures of 3 for 32 and 69 off 102 deliveries, Brandon McMullen was named the player of the match award. With this loss, West Indies will not qualify for World Cup 2023.
