India Tour of West Indies 2023 Test 1 Day 1: India in commanding position
The Indian Cricket Team started the 2023-25 Test Championship cycle in a commanding position against the struggling West Indies on the first day of the First Test match played at Windsor Park, Dominica on 12 July 2023.
West Indies captain Kraigg Braithwaite won the toss and
decided to bat first. Mohammed Siraj bowled with great venom troubling Kraigg
Braithwaite going past his outside edge. Jaydev Unadkat could not find his rhythm.
R Ashwin was bought into the attack and got rid of Tangerine Chanderpaul with a
beauty. Tangerine Chanderpaul and Kraigg Braithwaite added 31 runs for the
opening wicket.
Ashwin struck again to dismiss West Indies captain Kraigg
Braithwaite providing easy catch to Rohit Sharma. Shardul Thakur was introduced
into the attack dismissing Raymon Reifer as Ishan Kishan took low diving catch.
The debutant Alick Athanze looked steady against disciplined Indian bowling. R
Ashwin troubled the West Indies batters keeping them guessing. Mohammed Siraj
took a stunning diving catch to dismiss Blackwood picking up 4 wickets giving
away 68 runs.
Soon after the lunch break, Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Joshua
Da Silva with a rebound catch by Ishan Kishan to leave West Indies in deep
trouble. Alick looked steady showing some resistance along with Jason Holder.
Siraj produced the breakthrough getting rid of Holder by short ball tactics providing an easy catch to Shardul Thakur. Holder and Alick added 41 runs for the 6th
wicket. Ashwin then deceived Alazzari Jospeh with an easy catch to Unadkat. The
veteran off-spinner struck again to dismiss debutant Alick to leave West Indies
in tatters. West Indies ended the 2nd session at 137 for 8.
Ravindra Jadeja got rid of Kemar Roach with a review for
LBW. The umpire called it not out but on review it was overturned to out.
Ashwin dismissed Jomel Worrican with sharp catch by Shubman Gill at short leg
skittling out West Indies for 150.
In reply, Yashvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma looked confident
with their shots against West Indies bowling. The pitch had turn creating
pressure on batters. Despite surviving few anxious moments, the Indian openers ended
the first day in a strong position at 80 for 0. Jaiswal smashed reverse sweep
shot in the final over.
India 80 for 0 in 23 overs (Jaiswal 40*, Rohit Sharma 30*) trail
West Indies 150 in 64.3 overs ( Alick Athanaze 47, Ashwin 5/60, Ravindra Jadeja
3/26) by 70 runs.
